Oil Pan Gasket?
I am thinking about replacing the failed Oil Sensor for my '98 Estate. Could someone tell me if I need a new gasket for the oil pan? Or do I just use RTV sealant instead of a gasket? It seems though aftermarket replacement gaskets are available but I am unable to find OEM. I'd appreciate it if some can confirm this from the service manual.

When my mechanic recently changed out my oil level sensor on the wagon he just used RTV when putting the pan back on. He said they always do it that way at his shop and haven't had any issues.

I just removed lower pan from 2008 Bluetec and it was RTV from the factory.
Pretty darn good stuff as I bent lip on steel pan trying to pry it off.
Tip on installing covers with RTV - don't overdo it, tight it up fresh with finger-torque only, let dry overnight and torque the following day.

Take a look at the aftermarket part and compare it to an MB part---see any difference plus there is a seal ring 023 997 43 48(may vary by VIN)------------ and never use RTV save that for lawn mowers and bicycles. Plus change mechanics if they choose to use RTV vs a gasket!

The OP does not state what engine is in his '98 Estate. The term Estate makes me think he might be overseas. If the engine is a M112/M113, there is no pan gasket. The factory sealant is Locktite 5970 - M-B Part #003 989 98 20, applied in a 2.0mm +/- 0.5mm bead. The US dealers sell tubes of this product at a reasonable price. Cut the tip of the nozzle to the correct size to control the bead size. Keep the bead inside the bolt pattern - see attachment. DO NOT smear all over the surface. Be very careful removing the old sealant. The WIS recommends Locktite 7200 for removing the sealant but I can't find it in the US. I found a similar product from Permatex that softens the sealant so it can be removed without much effort, but I think it has been discontinued. The WIS also recommends using Locktite 7063 cleaning spray - M-B Part #001 986 71 71 10.
Note - the cleaning and sealant products are the same as used for the vent chambers on the valve covers and other joints. Also, make sure it is fresh. Don't use if it is over 1 year old.

Thanks for all your illuminating work, however read the post---we are talking about the oil level sensor not the pan gasket---once again more confusion----simply read the post--Biff

Well, excuse my conclusion, I, in my vast stupidity, I read this from the OP: Could someone tell me if I need a new gasket for the oil pan? Or do I just use RTV sealant instead of a gasket?
