Failure with AMG exhaust....

I bought a used AMG exhaust and took it ot the muffler shop today and they showed me that it has a single inlet whereas my muffler has dual inlets. I was very surprised since I thought this would directly fit onto my 1999 E320.
Does the E55 really only have a single inlet?
They recommended I not install it and now i have to deal with the guy I bought it from to get a refund.
Has anyone else had this happen with AMG or other exhausts?

Does your look like the above?

My mid and final muffler look like this for the exhaust that I put on.

It fit in the 2000+ stock AMG rear bumper too.

Interesting, there should be two going into the mid-muffler/resonator and one coming out to the rear muffler. Here's my castrated resonator/mid-muffler (front of car/engine is on the right)

Here's how the bottom of the car looks without it - the darker colored pipe is where the resonator used to be (note the "Y" part in the front that needed to be made cuz there were two pipes going into the resonator)

Actually, I did have my mid muffler removed. But that still doesn't explain why there are 2 inlets that go into my rear muffler. The muffler shown by EKlasse in his photo of the green E320 shows only a single pipe entering the rear muffler.

thanks for everyone's help.

Maybe you have an aftermarket muffler on already, E-Klasse's muffler also has two goung into it - two going into the mid-muffler, two coming out of it and into the rear muffler. You must have done two straight pipes instead of one on mine when the resonator was removed.

Need a pic of your existing muffler to confirm. In any case, to make the E55 pipes work on yours you'll need to do a straight pipe like mine

The rear muffler I have is definitely stock. It has the MB logo and all the typical model numbers on it. looking at the car today on the lift, I could tell that when the mid muffler was removed that there were 2 spliced pipes to join the existing pipes. The spliced pieces are lighter in color since they are fairly new.

kind of puzzling. i'll try and take a pic.

I ended up getting a couple of chromed round pipes welded onto my stock ehaust pipes today after I couldn't get the AMG muffler installed. they look OK, but not great.

Hmmmmm, if only I posted earlier ....the cost and labor of redoing the spliced pipes might have been the same as welding those chromed tips on...... oh well.....

You have an AMG muffler for the 1996 and 1997 E320 inline six or E420. All 1998 thru 2002 models with the modular V6 and V8 engines have dual inlet mufflers.

I guess that would explain it.

Looks like I have an AMG muffler for sale now. I'm going to try returning it to the seller first though.

Not on my late 98, but it's only a 2.4l V6
