Can't read cat

Could really use some help. Recently bought an '02 E430, 1 owner, 20 years of service upkeep, only 66000 on it, but the scanner can't read the cat monitor. The battery was dead due to that tele system, in addition, there's a rattle under the driver floor, I suppose a broken cat?
My questions, how many miles must be driven for the OBD system to be read after the dead battery, and will a driving cycle be required when that's completed? (seems there are a thousnd different methods out there to achieve a cycle.)
Thanks for any advice!

once you have the minimum voltage and key in on position you should be able to read all modules that your scanner has the capability to read. regarding the noise simply put the car on a lift and examine the exhaust system---a very simple process

Thanks, Plutoe. After my mechanic got the "cat not ready", told me to drive 60 miles, come back. If it's cleared, then he'll put it on the lift for the rattle, & figure out any codes. ( I do have the MB drive cycle, practically impossible here in Northern N.J. without backing up a lot of traffic & not stopping for several miles.).

Same problem (rattle) just surfaced on my '99 e320. Interested in what they find before I go to shop.

i too have rattle on my 99 e320
and now the car idles rough and cel is flashing
so i am thinking the cats are bad

but before i spend 2K at MB for new cats - does that make sense that the cats are bad giving rough idle and not able to drive really over 10mph??

I found a muffler specialty shop that in my town (Atlanta) that was able to cut out the bad cat and replace with an aftermarket. No check engine lights. Everything works normally.
Here's another possibility/resource for less than you might think -

wow thx
but dag it all, they have the right side only---and says for sedan and i suspect sedan / wagon would be different ---albeit slightly but different enough to cause a non-fit problem??? idk
I may write to them and see about the driver side, bc i think the driver side is the side i need. but i would like to do both while im at it

thx! any other sites you would recommend to look/check?
