MB Changed the Extended Warranty

So I agreed with the dealer on the extended warranty. He goes to enter it in the computer and it is gone! That is, the code is code. Some other code showing $4200 is there (double the price).

It seems the warranties changed just as we got there. They now include the electronics. For a lot more money. $2500 until 5 years or 100k miles, $3100 for 6 years/100k miles, and $4200 for 7 years. And the dealer says there is a lot less margin so that he can't (won't) discount.

Anyone know the story?

Thanks,

David

P.S.
We are doing 25-30k miles/year, however that may change.

I don't know what you'd call that (bait and switch?) but it sure sounds fishy.

I drive my Mercedes a very long time (17 years, 13 years, etc). I'd never buy an extended warranty. In my experience you'll never get your money back because it will be long past 7 years before anything goes wrong and even then it won't be catastrophic. Just don't abuse the car and you should be fine.

Many people here will tell you the W211s don't meet that criteria. Mine has probably spent two weeks in the shop so far...in just 4 month since we picked it up.

1-800-367-6372 - let us know what they say. BTW might I suggest listing the problem(s) you’ve had and the corrective measures taken.

Yes please do list the problems you've had so I know what to watchout for.

The extended warranty was well worth the price on my old 95 C-class. Most of the problems was electrical. With that in mind and seeing how dependent the W211 is to electronics, I'm a bit worried.

I haven't had any problems with my E320 other than the ubiquitous need for a brake bleed. Having followed this forum for a long time, it seems that most of the problems are associated with optional equipment. The more gadgets you get, the more likely you'll have trouble with them.

I'll repeat what I alway say. Never buy the first year of a new model. This advice was good in the 50's and it's good in the new millennium. I ignored it once on a 1984 190D and regretted it. I drove that car for 17 years but if I'd waited for the 1985's, I'd have had a much better car.

We will call MB tomorrow. Our problems have been related to the SRS (turning off the passenger airbags), the drive dynamic seat (turning off until the car is rebooted), and Parktronic (staying on and beeping when nothing is nearby).

Mostly seems to working now (the seats have spasmotic pulses every now and then).

David

P.S.
On the other hand, it returns 28-30mpg on snow tires in our 45 mile (each way) commute.

Unfortunately that didn't work for me. I intentionally waited until 95 to buy the C-class (94 was first model year), the car was still plagged with problems. On the contrary a friend bought his in 94 and has had less problem than mine. So I guess it's all luck.

I think the extended warranty (DFS) purchased for my C-class in 95 was about $1600. The first repair was a leaking fuel tank which costed $1200. Then all the suceeding repairs didn't get much cheaper. So it was WELL worth it. When we picked up the W211 they offered the warranty for $2400 which wasn't so hot of a deal. But if the price increase was true, I should have jumped on it.

In Canada they have yet to change the prices, so if you are in Canada and you want it - you guys should get it now.

If by “you guys” you mean your fellow Canadians I guess this could make sense. But MB web pages sometimes lag behind. Also, I wouldn’t think U.S. owners can purchase warranties meant for Canadian vehicles.

Thats how we feel. Screwed!

I called the dealer and MB, and still don't have a straight answer as to what is covered. MB is sending me a brochure. They wanted to charge me 75¢ for it plus $5 shipping. They agreed to send it gratus, but only after I think I went through the phone line to rip their what ever off.

The dealer has no printed info.

The car is nice. MB USA has serious problems.

You know, I’ve been thinking about this. I had no interest in purchasing the extended warranty (EW) and therefore am unaware of the details. Curious, what does the previous EW actually cover since they only now added electronics?

Well, a quick story about me. I am currently in the market for an E500, I will be making the purchase sometime in April and May thus have been roaming this board for quite some time.

The question I have is how this extended warranty work. Does it extend the original warranty 5 more years for $2500 so making it 4 original year + 5 extended year for a total of 9 years warranty?

It's very likely I will be buying a 04 model instead of a new 05 one, will this extended warranty apply for pre owned model as well?

When you talk "extended warranty" you always mention X Years/Y Miles coverage. This refers to the total number of years that the car has been in service since day one, INCLUDING the additional coverage purchased, OR the total number of miles since the car was originally put on the road & registered by an owner.

Therefore on a car that would come with a 36 mo/36k mile warranty & you buy a 5/50 warranty, you are only adding 2 additional years OR 14 thousand additional miles of coverage. The name refers to the TOTAL coverage not the extra amount of coverage you are really getting for your money.

But I have the extended warranty. I might talk to my dealer to see if my car's old extended coverage can be swapped for the new coverage if I pay the difference in price.

The price increase apprx. 70%. huge jump.... i am glad I bought mine ealier.

The Newer model now has so many electronic items...such as airmatics... the warranty is probably necessary if you are planning to keep your car for longer period of time than standard 4yr/50k.

Any of the major item fail, you get your money back.

NO.

You have option to purchase extend warranty up to 7yr/100k.

original basic warranty is 4yr/50K

+1 years becomes 5 yr/100k

+2 years becomes 6 yr/100k

+3 years becomes 7 yr/100k generally speaking.

The +1, +2 or +3yrs warranty kicks in when ever you original basic warranty expired.

For example:

If you reach 50,001 miles in second years, that means your original basic warranty expired and extend warranty kick in. You have 3 years from that point up to 100,000 miles which ever comes first.

Or if you driven your car for 4 years and only driven 20,000miles. Your extend warranty kick in right after the 4th year is up. The extend warranty kick in when ever your basic warranty expired.

And that is important for someone who drives 25-30k miles/year!

We would have done 7/100k on the old plan. Now we are trying to decide between the 5/100k and 6/100k plans.

I posted about this price increase on the warranty back in October. When I bought my 05, they told me the warranty price was going to double in just a few months. At the time I wasn't sure whether or not it was a sales ploy, but bought it anyway (at a reduced price) because of all the problem I'd had with my C320. Obviously it was for real, and they've known it was coming at least since October.

I’ll ask again – the original extended warranty offers do not cover electronics? Or is it that because electronics have always been covered, however the additional cost to satisfy these repairs has caused the price increase?

The original warranty covers electronics, the cost to repair the vehicles, including electronics has increased due to actual and projected repairs. These increased costs and projected future repairs have necessitated the dramatic increase in the cost of the MB extended warranties. Third party warranties, also based on actual repair experience and projections have also increased in price.

I still believe the audio systems (& Comand?) are specifically NOT included in the original extended warranty.
