MP3s on DVDs on 04 - clarification
I have an 04 E320 (4m wagon). I'd been having the dreaded static problem and the dealer last week did an audio software update (I had told them about the suggested update posted here (W211 589 06 22 00). Prior to the update, my CD player would not play MP3 files -- it simply rejected all such discs, and would not recognize a DVD at all. After the update, I can now not only play MP3s off of CDs, but it will also play them off of a DVD as well. The car was delivered in February 04; it was January 04 production. This clarifies that at least some 04s indeed have DVD audio play capability. Its worth asking for this update (it was under warranty). For me, having my music on a DVD is as good as having an iPod, or better, as I can easily deal with being able to to listen to "only" a selection from 4GB.

I had my navigation system freeze a couple of times. After the software update, the system can play MP3s on a CD ROM. I do not have any music format DVDs to test, but since my car is from March of 2004, I might burn one to see. That would really be wonderful if it can! 4 GB is much better than 80 MB.
On a side note, has anyone tried playing WMA files on the system?

As for the X3, its my wife's, and I like it. Its a car-like SUV. The handling is excellent. Its rougher and noisier than an E -- by far, and I am happier in my E. It has nice bluetooth phone interface that MB could learn from. Its audio is not as good as MB -- it wilkl play mp3s from CD only. And surprisingly (because I had a 540 and liked the Nav), I find the Nav system more complicated than MB's even if there's more street level detail. Just too many button pushes to get what you want. As an SUV we will use in bad weather (we just got it, which of course guarantees that there will be no more for this year at least and maybe longer), its just fine.

There is someone who regularly sells copies on the UK ebay site. See here for an example.

i can buy that software update from ebay, but once the firmware is updated and something went wrong, is it reversible? one thing i know for sure is that once in a while (rare), my audio system make static sound, shut off for few seconds/minute then ok.

My dealer loaded this for me. Just took two minutes. Once it's loaded there's no going back though.

It may not be easy to see from the pic on ebay, but it lists the model numbers for the COMAND head units that it is for. I reckon as long as your unit is there you should be OK.

I got the update, but I have not had any success in using MP3's on CD, let alone DVD. Early 2004 build.
Can anyone confirm the version numbers so that I can check to see if I really do have the latest update?

did you get the software from dealer or ebay? do you have copy? few people in here got update from dealer but still cannot play mp3. so now i am just looking for working ill working software. let me know if anyone can help. willing to pay for the service.

I had all of the updates done at the dealer. they did them as part of attempted troubleshooting for some issues that I have been experiencing. My problems started because the Nav system was dealer installed and not factory. Unfortunately, they did not "tell" the system that it had been done, so some confusion occured.
