Broke down and installed mud guards...

Well,

I didn't want to do it, but frankly with the kind of mileage i put on the car (3 months to the day, 6600 miles) i didn't have much choice. It amazes me how much crap gets kicked up by the front wheels especially on the 500. I've never had a car who's tires protruded as much past the body as this (and i've owned a C5 & 3000GTVR4 ). I'm sure that's why its so prone to kicking up everything you drive on.

Anyway, picked up a set of mud guards for the front at the dealer, $ 66.00 for the pair, install was about 10 minutes per tire (didn't have to remove front wheels), will post pics if anyone is interested tomorrow. FWIW - my cars brilliant silver. I'm going to live w/ them a while, if they really bother me i may paint them body color.

Love my flaps...

They keep the car clean and more importantly, prevent damage to the finish from stuff kicked up by the tires, esp occasional gravel that gets stuck between tread ribs in the tire.

The MB flaps were not available for the rear of the CDI, as of 11/2004, but do a MBWORLD search, someone used a Euro part #, so I went to dealer and ordered them. Took a little trimming and drilling (drilling flap, not car) but they went on almost perfectly, and they look great and do the job.

rear pics...

Ce750,

Sorry, all i could stomach were the fronts! They are actually disappearing to my eyes after a few days so i'm definately getting used to them. The great thing is i'll rarely have to get the tar cleaner out for the door areas again.

I wonder if it's brake dust, but it always seems like the lower body panels just behind the car get this black colored (almost invisible) dirt/dust on them... even if I never drive thru a puddle or anything that would throw dirt on them. It's especially pronounced in the rear which is odd since there is less dust off the brakes there. I wonder if these would halt that?

Anyone else notice this black stuff? I get it on my microfiber towel after I use some mist detail on the car..

don't think its break dust...

But - what are you dressing the wheels with?
I've sworn by "Notouch" spray over the years but recently bought a similar spray from Armorall at BJ's. Sprayed it on the tires at night, drove to work in the AM. When i got out of the car in the AM, black stuff all behind all 4 tires on the body, oily too. Now i have 3 cans to finish using till i go back to notouch!

just a thought.

Looks good..

Man, I really like that white on the E... If it weren't for my white XC90 I could have easily gotten the wife to buy off on it.. Especially here in AZ..

the mud flaps actually look good.. I may look into this tomorrow.

nothing... I hate the stuff.. It must be brake dust.. but it's just so darn much!

I thought about using silicone spray, but I heard it's bad for the tire. Which is odd since it's supposed to be good for rubber.

That black stuff is diesel soot

I get it too.

BTW are there any small, black puddles that form in the garage beneath the tailpipes on anyone else's CDI?

Seems like water condensates in the exhaust. If you let it idle at cold startup, it drips out black.

When you drive off, exhaust kicks it out and that's probably whats on the back of the car.

Without seeing any pics at first, it was doubtful on the way it would look. Actually, they don't look bad at all. In your case, it's practical and a way to protect your investment.

that makes sense since it's on the back side more so.. but then It must only happen when the car is stopped since while it's moving it's impossible for the soot to work it's way to the side like that.

When ever I get the car to the wash (there is a hand wand wash near my office) I spray the pipes to get some of that black soot out so I don't get this problem. Don't misunderstand, I don't spray up inside the mufflers, just aim the high pressure spray at the exhaust nozzle which does the job.

I'm going to get this done today. MB of Fort Lauderdale.

It took quite a while to get this solution.

Bought the car on Memorial Day.

Hi Aceman

It has been awhile since I took pictures of my car. I have this front offset shot and hopefully this helps.

If you need something better, let me know and I'll take some this weekend.

Sounds good???

As for the tint, I have factory tint. I find the greenish tint is good enough for me as I have shades for the side and rear.

side shots...

Thanks Gearhead. I was curious how the profile looked/ w/ the guards on both wheels. I think they blend in fairly nicely.

Those are 17's on your car? Cause they look just like the 16's on my car, only bigger.. I'd love to get a hold of a set of those, if they're indeed 17's.

Man, that white looks good!

Yup, those are 17". A buddy of mine was trying to get me to upgrade to 19 but I am happy with the 17". I think at 17", it is a pretty good balance between performance and comfy ride.

Question Mud guard question

You or someone else mentioned that there was trimming to do on the mud guards for the 211 e500. I want to put them on my "06 211 but my dealer, actually a great parts manager, says they are not specifically for that car although he did allow that people do try it and seem to have success. Remembering my '97 e320 mud guards, they were put on with just clips and sometimes started to fall off. Are these mud guards put on with screws or some sort of clamp? If they are more substantial than the previous ones, I certainly will put on a set. Thanks

no modding on my 2005 e500...

they had both screws and clamps, nice design IMO.
