MB Rates top in Quality in Europe

I for one have a lot more faith in European perceptions on a car, than American ones that are fixed on cup holders and brake dust!

Yes, I read this as well. Seems strange MB is rated #1 by European countries and near the bottom here. Humm. Different criteria?

Very different, as Americans we look for very different things.
Plus don't forget, Lexus has a very weak stronghold in Europe.

even JD power rated the interior of the MB superior to the Lexus and others... it's this obsession with not having a car break down in an electrical sense that plagues MB.. usually when an MB has a failure, it can be linked to a software or electronic hardware issue.. this can easily be remedied and is usually so.. but the Japs do a better job of keeping that stuff more simple and reliable. Does this make the MB a low quality car? Well, lets put it like this... is the Space Shuttle low quality? Can you think of a time when the Space Shuttle didn't have a electrical problem?

The space shuttle is very low quality. It's a prime example of why there should be more privatization on projects like that. Way too much buying from the lowest bidder going on there...

Quality of interior is subjective. I personally rank the Lexus the highest, but then again, if I had gotten the Nappa on my X5, I would probably say the X5 would be the highest.

it is and it isn't... I mean either the fit and finish is superior or it's not... and there are probably objective was to measure this. However, the JD power initial quality rated the E320 superior to the ES330 in interior quality. I happen to agree, and so do these European buyers.. Further more, the Chassis and outer body was ALSO rated higher..

Face it, aside from electrical reliability (a major part of a modern car, I'll admit) the Japanese cars are generally inferior.

Haha, I hate ES's.

Your opinion on the inferiority of Japanese cars.
But hey bro, once Mercedes gets their act together (which they are) and pushes their suppliers for a lot more stringent quality control, I know I'll be singing a different tune.

Dang, computer AI is getting better every day.

Anywho, I have this discussion about quality quite a bit. Here many people quote "Consumer Reports", I swear they sit up and memorize factoids from it at night. CR has a nice simple way of rating reliability, count up the number of faults. Mind you why take time to differentiate between two people with a model having a turn signal bulb replaced and two people with a different model having an engine replaced right? Each had two faults and that is all that matters Ok, a little harsh there, some of the articles break out electrical, mechanical, etc. but still the granularity is not there. A number of minor problems can make a good car look bad, while a smaller number of major problems can make a bad car look good.

Oh, and sport(y) cars are often faulted for being louder and having a harsher ride that the beloved Honda Accord. *DUH*.

I'll keep to reviews by TopGear. Not much more realistic an evaluation but much more amusing.

Lets look at it like this...
The Space Shuttle has all those failures because EVERY SINGLE item that is used to build it is made by the lowest bidder. (Not so at MB) I'd say its low quality, but it works most of the time. Those Astronauts are VERY brave, indeed!

Hah! They rate Fiat as worst, unbelivable!
Just kidding, I did own a Fiat once. In fact it was my first car. It was a disposable though. Once it ran out of gas I dispossed of it, or should have.

Mercedes all the way!
haha, i'm rather surprised Europeans rated MB highest in quality, given that *I THOUGHT* most of the complaints about MB quality came from euro mags. guess this goes to show there's a gulf between what the mags say, and what the general mass experiences.

on the other hand, MB is almost always ranked higher in quality in Asian mags. usually followed by Jag, then BMW - that's a pretty unthinkable result in Europe, but Jags have a strong image here - many think they're more expensive than the comparable MB.

anyway it all goes to show that all these surveys must be read with a pinch of salt, and a close reading of what criteria they actually used to rank the cars.
