I plan to buy a 2010 model, if this goes as I think it will.

Let's see..

btw.. "due for launch in 2009" .. does this mean as a 2010 model? or a 2009 model, available in 2008, as I've read before on the rumor mill? I would hope we can go thru 2009 on the W211 chassis.

Does that mean that the 4 Matics will be assembled by MB and not in Graz?? If so thats a shame, having had 2 of them I feel that the Graz cars had better quality than those assembled in Germany

Mercedes all the way!
from the article, it seems it will come out in 2009 (i.e. 2010 model).

as for Graz, they could easily set up a joint venture - after all DC and Steyr have a pretty close relationship. it's usual to say the 4 Matic is made by Magna Steyr - but check out the real name of the company: Daimler-Steyr-Puch... :P
http://www.whnet.com/4x4/team_mbusi.html

in any case, manufacturing must proceed with joint ventures in many countries where it is impossible for DC to own the factories completely - e.g. in Malaysia and China. sure, it's still "in-house".. just in partnership with others.. just like now. of course i envision they'd try to take over more management control and all that, but in terms of actual ownership that's sometimes just not legally possible.

I would be surprised if the article is accurate about it being '10 model...

anyway, I noticed my 17" wheels are actually made in Austria... I am guessing a lot of MB is made over there, there are a lot of close relationships in business between Germany and Austria.

If the American marketing machine is any indication, the love affair with meaningless year models means that the 2009 will be available next week and about a month after that the 3009 model will be out.

so true! I miss the days when a benz has a 12-14 year run! Look at the older SL's and S classes.. timeless design doesn't have to change, just to change! I wish MB was still run by the group that ran it so well thru the 80's.. these guys today are just bean counters and not car buffs.

With some of the cost cutting on trims and features we dont know if the year model is more AD or BC

Not meaningless when it comes to depreciation and model changes.

which is why I'd like to see the new design be "available" in '09 and not '08... I'd get better resale on the current '05.
