steering fluid

Had my 10,000 mile service on '04 e500 and a day or two later I am hearing a funny noise. Go by dealer and just listening the determine I need steering fluid. Noise goes away, 3 weeks later "its back..." and I don't see any drip marks in garage indicating a leak. Anyone else have this issue???

I agree, I had this very same noise and they replaced the steering gear box/steering rack. No problem since.

Do you have a parts or service # from dealer for this fix? My steering is making this noise as well...

Cool, thanks. I will give my SA hell if he tells me they can't "reproduce the problem".

I had a similiar problem with my steering. Loud groaning noise. Is that what you have?

They replaced the power steering pressure hose and that fixed the problem.

Yup, a loud grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel. I can hear it especially during cold starts in the morning.

It could be leaking into the boots and not (yet) on to the floor. If the dealer thinks it's OK to add PS fluid at 10,000 miles, I'd take my car elsewhere. I had the same problem on my E55 and they replaced the rack at about 5,000. I have 50,000 now and have not added a drop of PS fluid since.

In my case, the power steering pump was leaking slowly. I noticed the PS fluid level was low when doing a pre-trip check on the car. I bought some fluid to top off. 1 liter of the MB fluid cost something like $25 or $30; it was not the traditional MB PS fluid which is not as expensive. I made an appointment after my trip to have the problem solved. I also noticed a slow coolant leak. The water pump was replaced too.

Agree with E55AMG99; if the hydraulic system is fine, there should be no need to add any fluid.

I have seen a couple 211's with a p/s type noise but it is actually the a/c compressor... If the noise increases only with engine rpm and not when you turn the wheel, thats the prob.

Most likely it is leaking at the rack if you can't see it. You would have to lose a lot of pentosin fluid to be able to see it leak onto the ground.

Thanks for insight, dealer says it was a small leak near rack. ?? Also go my ugly black Sat. radio antenna changed over to small antennae that matches my color and my i-pod install. It is a good day! Actually if I knew in advance (2004e500) that I could have I pod installed I would have not had Sat. radio. Oh well things are good~
