Sounds high- any private MB mechanics in your area? (m)

Looks like all they did was some relatively minor work and charge a huge flat book rate. Did they make your grab your ankles as well? How many miles did you get out of the existing brakes?

21,500 mi. Fronts still had 10% left on them but I didnt want to be back in the shop in 30 days for them. Wear indicator was never set off, I had them visually inspect the brakes.

Brakes at 21,500

Are you kidding me, 21,500 miles and you have to change out the brakes pads?. I have a Infiniti Q45 that has 66k on it and have yet to worry about the brakes. Now that you have mentioned it though, yesterday while driving on a trip of 140 Miles, I noticed that when I come to a stop, the brakes are squeeking, I have 22k on my car. I guess I should prepare myself for a bill right after Christmas. Is there a longer lasting set of brakes out there and if so, how difficlut are they to do ?

The Pagid pads last longer than the OEM ones. If you want to do it yourself, there is a thread right now that explains the whole procedure very well. The important issue is to disconnect the SBC, before working on the brakes. Once the SBC is disconnected, the job is straight forward. The SBC must be disconnected before doing it!!!

I live on Long Island where there is a stop sign on every other corner in any direction in areas not controlled by traffic lights. Its an improper use of stop signs, but thats what the homeowners want to slow down traffic, so they complain to the town & the town plants a stop sign.

What most people don't understand (and you seem to) is that the type of driving you do, and the area in which you drive has by far the largest effect on when you change pads.

I live in Phoenix, where most streets are wide open, and the distance between lights is at times 1/2 mile or more... you can in many cases go from one end of town to another on a major street as 45-55mph and not hit a single light for a while if you time it... therefore covering some 4-5 miles on one brake application, and what's more is you can see that you're not going to make a light from a good distance so you can just let off on the gas and let the car drift down from 45-35 before you use some light braking to stop... this in contrast to 4-5 miles in Long Island and sudden stops due to people rushing into the streets to cross is a night and day (or apple and oranges) experience for the car and it's brakes.

I recall my Volvo V70 went 60K before it needed brakes out here. Back in Atlanta my 960 needed new brakes at 29K.
