W211 Owners---Brake question
#4
I've had the brake visit workshop light come on at least 6 times total since ive owned the vehicle in 03. Is this normal? I know of alot of recalls on the vehicle for the SBC, but Ive brought it in everytime for the recall. It just came back on today again for the 7th time

Your problem may be electrical.

03 E320 -wife's car now; 07 Porsche Boxster S - my toy
I have an 03 E320 bought in Mar 03, built Jan 03. After having the car for about 5 weeks, the Brake Visit Workshop warning came on. Brought into the dealer and they replaced all 3 brake sensors -- never had the problem since -- car now has 58K miles.

was '03 E320 - now - '04 S4
hmmm... actual visits to the dealer? 2 - the rear pads were gone @ 32K miles and I had the SBC update done as well.
# of times the "Visit Workshop" light came on for brake related issues? 5 or 6
I really didn't pay attention to the MFD because it was always screaming "Visit Workshop" for some reason or another.

Never had a problem yet. My MFD has not turned red for any kind of failure. I only know it turns red because I sometimes put on the parking brake when the car is still barely rolling and the MFD turns red for a fraction of a second saying to release the parking brake. Oh yes, it has also turned red when I have had a door that was not closed all the way. These are not malfunctions so I can not complain.
I will be having the grounding wire recall done next month along with whatever else is still needed. I have already had the original SBC recall fixed that included the software upgrade. I also had the voltage regulator or BCM recall done in October of 05.
So far, my brakes have been fine. They are sometimes a bit touchy, but they have performed well and reliably. I have a March of 2004 production car with about 16,500 miles. My brakes pads still have 85%+ of the lining left.
I am hoping that if I have not had any issues up to now, then I probably will not have any in the future. It sounds to me like the people who are having issues tend to have them early.

Never.....MFD only turned red when I had a door that was not completly closed and when the parking brake was applied when I put it into gear.
I've had all the recalls done (bracket, ground wire, battery etc).

Nothing recently, but I did have an experience for a few days when I would get some brake messages. Took it in, and of course they couldn't find anything wrong, but they replaced a few things, and it has not come back. Only gone back to the dealer vis-a-vis the brakes to get them replaced.

Multiple times on my '03 E320. The first time for legitimate reasons as the rear pads were replaced at 24K miles. At about 27K miles it started coming on again. I was thinking that this meant the front pads needed replacing. Close to 29K miles I finally took the car in only to find out that this was not the case. Service said the false messages may have been due to some code error. Since getting the car back I have had two more messages saying I need brake service (over a 3 week period).
If the frequency does not increase I'm just going to ignore it for a while. I'll address the issue at my next oil change.
