2007 E320 CDI will NOT be 50 state legal

This is from the MBUSA website:

Alternative Fuels — Diesel and Ethanol (E85)
Arriving in Fall 2006, third-generation CDI turbocharged diesels available in the 2007 ML320 CDI, R320 CDI, and E320 CDI BlueTec®* blend remarkable fuel economy with quick response and comfort. The new E320 offers advanced BlueTec technology to reduce nitrous oxide emissions even further. Available in Summer 2006, the new 2007 C230 Sports Sedan will offer flexible fuel capability, allowing the vehicle to operate on ethanol (E85) — another gasoline alternative. Contact a Mercedes-Benz Dealer to learn more. Check back often for updates and information.

* The 2007 E320 CDI BlueTec, ML320 CDI, and R320 CDI do not meet the emissions requirements of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, or Vermont and are not available in these states.

I better move in with you

Since I am in CA, I better "move in with you" so I can get one of these.

I wonder why the VW Toureg diesel is now for sale in CA but the M and R Class diesel are not?

That's the case as of *right now*, and no dealer in those states may solicit or take orders for them *right now*. I believe that Mercedes is/will be having the new cars tested for compliance. If the Bluetec system is as clean as Mercedes is claiming it will be, the cars should be certified there and available in the future. I wonder if they're even available for testing yet, given the upcoming build dates for the '07's.

BlueTec is the system of particuate filters that all of the 07 E320's will have. It will not pass the other 5 states requirements. AdBlue, which is not approved (yet?) by the EPA or any of the 5 states is the urea injection system which could allow the cars to be 50 state legal, when and if it is approved.

Looks like MB will force me to register the car in AZ at one of the hotels and force me to drive it here in California. One can always beat this ****ty system.

I am sure MB would love to sell you a CDI in California. I think you have to look at the EPA and California State for the source of your "****ty system".

I should have been more clear. I know the CDI would sell like hotcakes here in California. The ****ty system was meant to refer to California's worthless and downright ridiculous emissions rules IMO.

Correct. How to keep owners from allowing the fluid to run out which would make the car out of compliance is what Mercedes and the EPA are wrangling over right now. The EPA I imagine wants some type of promise or guarantee that E320 owners will keep their cars in spec or that MB dealers will monitor them to make sure they're kept in spec. I wish I could be a bug on the wall they're negotiating all of this!

It must be very frustrating to want a nice diesel and not be able to get a new one in these states, when you look out and see trucks and busses just belching large, and really large black clouds of unburned diesel. The legislators legislate to get votes. The trucking industry takes care of them.

Amen!

I've never understood how a car could do as much damage to the environment when trucks put the most clearly visible gook in the air at every press of the pedal.
