cooling fan on all the time?

Don't know if this is normal or not, but as soon as I turn on the car, the cooling fan goes on and runs all the time, till I shut it off. Is this normal? I live in Vegas, and yes, its hot. Also the fan is extremely loud, sounds like the car is a airplane trying to take off or something?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Ed

I am sure this is normal. Here it is hot so it is on high the past week or so..

If it is too loud, you can adjust the fan on the console a couple down from the top setting and that will not sound as loud.

The reason it does that is to keep you, the owner of the car comfortable.

The ultra-loud aux fan noise should quiet down on its own once you get moving, or at any rate you won't hear it much after you get moving (unless it's wicked-hot, like Death Valley hot). The very fast aux fan operation seems to coincide with "MAX COOL" in the climate control display - the four-zone climate control, anyway.

Uh, guys, he's talking about the cooling fans in the engine bay not the interior climate cooling fans.

Mine does the same thing, so I think it's normal. When you stand outside, the car is EXTREMELY loud. My parents' Lexus is almost totally silent, so I am wondering why MB can't make it the same way.

So are you saying that by lowering the fan setting in the interior of the car you are also lowering the fan speed of the radiator cooling fan under the hood? I would seriously doubt this, but I'm no Brainiac.

I don't know if the 2 fans are related, BUT I have noticed the same correlation. Listen with your window open. When the A/C is on "max cool", that fan in the radiator area is extremely loud, as if an airplane is taking off. This IS quite embarassing as people in the parking lot look my way. Once I turn the fan speed down a couple of notches, the sound will soften.

Doubt it? Give it a try... Push it up to Max cool and then open your window, lower it and let me know.

Whenever the internal A/C controls are set so that the words "MAX COOL" are visible on the display, the radiator fan is turned on to its "airplane noise" speed/loudness. To achieve maximum cooling it is necessary to dump the most heat from the A/C condenser which is located in front of the radiator. That is done by drawing vast amounts of air over & thru the fins to pull the heat out of the A/C system refrigerant. If you dont pull all of the heat out & away from the coils the A/C will not cool the car interior. The interior heat from the car is absorbed by the A/C refrigerant & taken to the front of the car & must be dumped so that the refrigerant can go back into the car & pick up more heat.

Lol... Whenever I get in the car and there are people outside of it (family) - I usually hit the fan down until I get out of their way and then hit auto again. I do love the fact that the car gets cool right away.
