Strange sound.
07 E350.. When stopped at a light for a while I can hear this thunk thunk sound from the right rear area. Only happens when stopped for 20 seconds or more but it will thunk 3-4 times in a row. Does not matter if the car is cold or warm. I am totally clueless on this.

Still do. The E is half my car half my dads. I drive it when ever its in the garage I am really not a fan of the M3 driving on the streets or at night I hate the harassment from the ricers and everyone in a pickup truck trying to race you.

Its a minor problem, its some kinda valve. I dont know if you have the same problem as I did but the thumping sound I heard is exactly the spot you said but this mech guy just pull something out from the engine area and the sound was gone. He said it was a flap that just needed to be removed an uneccessary thing created by Mercedes.

Lol nice try. We have 5 cars and 3 drivers. The only person that has a car that is their car is my mom since we dare not drive it. I know none of the cars are mine since I did not pay for them, kind of like your car your parents bought it. But when I consider a car mine is when I leave my junk in it and drive it all the time without having to ask if its ok and when my parents talk about the car they call it mine. But as for the E class it has 600 miles on it and is considered more of a family car and I have put about 400 miles out of the 600 on it. It gets hard to fit friends in the M so I mostly drive the E at night.

Could be the right sending unit in the gas tank. It has a spring mount on it to allow for expansion of the fuel tank.. it can flex when engine vacuum is applied to it for the evaporative emissions purge system. I remember hearing about it on a C class one time. If you just just setting still and you hear it a few times, thats the only thing I could come up with. What accesories do you guys have on the car?

His explanation: it is the purgue valve to the charcoal canister (installed in the right rear well). If the fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full, the system performs a test to determine compliance with emissions standards. This is normal but agrees that the sound is quite loud and not acceptable.
Being today is Friday, I elected to take the car home for the weekend and made another appointment for Monday - assuming MB says it is OK to apply the fix. I will try to obtain bulletin number if and when fix is applied.

EPC (MB electronic parts catalog) shows shutoff valve part # 0004707193 replaces 0004704993 installed at production in addition, activated charcoal filter 2114700859 replaces 2114700659 indicating modification. Both should be replaceable under warranty without DTB reference if not already equipped. These new parts may solve your noise problem.

Finally got the car back this afternoon. The result? The thumping noise is gone!
What did they do? Replaced the purge valve and updated the ME module software (whatever that means ... plus, performed some sort of SCN coding update).
So far so good ... didn't hear the noise on the way to do some errands and on the way home. I will keep an "ear" out during the next few days.
Update: Two days later and still no thumping noise ... keeping my fingers crossed.

I just had this fixed last week.
Invoice reads "pressure pulsation in the purge line between the charcoal canister and the purge valve. Replace the pulsation damper with the newer design damper"
Parts:
005-997-83-90 Loom tie
211-470-01-16 Damper cage

Good thing is that this is actually fixed. I can barely hear the noise now when it happens only because I was trying to. Maybe they installed it differently. Does MB sometimes keep the same part # for updated parts?
I know Lexus does that sometimes.
