service B, 26,000 miles... ouch
I debated long and hard about getting an early production 2005 CDI that was on the lot or my mid 2004 production 4-Matic. The 05 CDI still had the butterfly center console and the "rest" feature on the climate control, but was missing a few extra options (like Xenon, trunk pass through with an actual ski sock HK sound and rear sunshade) it had the stone interior (I much prefer the charcoal) and I would have to pay for about $2,000 worth of service. Not to mention, the 4-Matic system is a must in my climate.
So the 10 MPG loss is no big deal seeing that I am getting everywhere I need to go and plowing through tons of snow without any dilemma.
4-Matic trumps CDI in this region hands down. However, if they make a RWD S class CDI, I might finally part with my Audi S6 Quattro and keep the E320 as my winter car. I am still a HUGE diesel fan who grew up driving the 3L I-5 turbo diesels.

If you can do your own maintenance, you will save a lot of money and you will probably do a better job. What you don't get are changes that require you to bring your car to a dealer for service. Of course if you know what's happening (thanks Konigstiger), then you can simply go to the dealer and ask them to install the fixes/changes under the warranty.

you still have a gasser so i dont feel bad i have to pay for service on my DIESEL.
