I know, but I got a gasser that is a 4-Matic not a RWD. There is no way I would have been able to get around anywhere here in the last 7 weeks without it. RWD (even with snow tires) would have been quite an adventure or suicide.

I debated long and hard about getting an early production 2005 CDI that was on the lot or my mid 2004 production 4-Matic. The 05 CDI still had the butterfly center console and the "rest" feature on the climate control, but was missing a few extra options (like Xenon, trunk pass through with an actual ski sock HK sound and rear sunshade) it had the stone interior (I much prefer the charcoal) and I would have to pay for about $2,000 worth of service. Not to mention, the 4-Matic system is a must in my climate.

So the 10 MPG loss is no big deal seeing that I am getting everywhere I need to go and plowing through tons of snow without any dilemma.

4-Matic trumps CDI in this region hands down. However, if they make a RWD S class CDI, I might finally part with my Audi S6 Quattro and keep the E320 as my winter car. I am still a HUGE diesel fan who grew up driving the 3L I-5 turbo diesels.

The charge seems quite reasonable to me. Thats only 1.6 cents per mile for the inspection/service.

Not quite, he probably had an A service at around 12-14k miles. So more like 3 cents a mile.

I did not say that the 1.6 cents was for everything, I just stated that it was a reasonable charge for that inspection. I am certain he has had the A service done also and even if it was the same cost as the B which I doubt, 3 cents a mile is extremely reasonable for maintenence costs for any type of vehicle, let alone a luxury vehicle. This figure will increase as the vehicle ages and when the warranties expire.

No I agree, I wasn't saying it was for "everything", I was simply stating you would have to do $420/13,000 since your starting point for the B service was 12-14k miles not $420/26,000 (starting at 0 miles) thats all. That is a reasonable charge for a mercedes, I agree.

The overwhelming cost of car ownership is the cost of money (interest) and depreciation. Maintenance costs aren't all that important although I'm like everyone else, I hate to get ripped off with the so-called Inspections. That's pure gravy for the service department.

If you can do your own maintenance, you will save a lot of money and you will probably do a better job. What you don't get are changes that require you to bring your car to a dealer for service. Of course if you know what's happening (thanks Konigstiger), then you can simply go to the dealer and ask them to install the fixes/changes under the warranty.
