The Argos Bluetooth for W211 finally set to ship?

Ok,

So I just got off of the phone with the guys at EuroCarPhone.com. As many of you here know, the Argos bluetooth unit for our cars has been delayed time and time again. They are now saying that the first batch is set to ship the week after next. Currently they have over 2000 people who have signed up on their waiting list and they are fulfilling those orders first. Depending on when you got on that list, you'll be receiving an email stating that it's available. I got on the list in August of 2006 and I was told that I was at about the 1000 person mark. He said availability for me would be about the beginning of March.

I know we've all heard this before but seems like they're getting real close.

For those who don't know what this is. It's basically a bluetooth solution for those of us who don't have the factory MB phone system installed in our cars. This little module attaches in the trunk of our cars, with 1 connection I believe, and it gives you complete integration of your bluetooth phone into COMAND, supposedly. It will download your phone book, you can use the steering wheel to place and receive calls, caller-id...the whole enchilada...again, supposedly.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on this

How many contacts does it download to the internal phone book? Can you specify which contacts? I have over 2,000 contacts in my phone and don;t want it picking the first 100 or some arbitrary number like that. Does it offer any way to program voice tags to phone numbers? i.e. "Call home"

Not sure of all of the specifics. Call the guys at www.eurocarphone.com they'll tell you everything you need to know about it.

Oh, and I think it's priced at 799.00

I suspect that the phonebook function will be limited to a range of phones since that requires the appropriate communication protocol to be supported at both ends.

Bluetooth doesnt actually mean anything at all. You still need all the handshaking profiles to exchange data. Then on top of that the phones discharge much faster in bluetooth mode which causes flat batteries.

Correct. I believe that Verizon Wireless is currently the only service provider that disables OBEX (Object Exchange) via bluetooth. So Verizon phones may not download the phonebook. But, there are many phone hacks available on the internet to enable this feature. It's very easy to do but don't ask me how I know this. Even if you decide not to enable OBEX on your verizon phone, everything else will work fine.

I definitely want bluetooth in the car that works through the command. My jeep has UConnect and it is cool. I just can't seem to figure out which one works best in the E.

Unless something has changed; your car is pre-wired for phone which means that the wires are there but the electronics are not. You will need the modules installed in the trunk and the phone dock in the armrest. When you have that you can, instead of putting a phone in the dock, get a BT dongle that functions as a gateway between your BT phone and the car.

The thing to be aware of is that MB uses the SAP BT profile to communicate with the phone. The SAP profile is common in Europe (and can be found in a lot of Euro cars like BMW, VW and Audi) but not that widely used in the US. That means that the phones available for the MB BT solution is somewhat limited and all depends on the make and the version of software the phone is running. I know that for instance MS Smartphone and Pocket PC phones don’t support SAP so you would not be able to DL the contact list to the car. The level of compatibility varies greatly and if you search the Tech Talk DL you will find a number of threads dealing with this issue.

Supposedly the Argos BT solution will take care of this and integrate seamlessly with the car and be much cheaper since there is no need for the electronics in the trunk and a separate BT dongle. The Argos module should be enough.

I believed for 2007 E-class, if you have P1(premium I) package for your car then all you need is the $350 Bluetooth module. Unlike the 2006 and earlier car, they would need to spend another $1400 for the phone kit(I did). You car is ready for bluetooth phone, however, I am not sure if the sprint blackberry will be 100% compatible.

This is correct. Just click the module onto the back wall of the center console and you are ready to go.

I called Eurocarphone and asked when the units for the '03-> E would be available. They told me that they have 1-2 units installed in cars now and they need to do some final debugging before they are ready. The person expected that it would be about a month or so before that was finished and they they have to start production.

If you signed up on the website you should receive notification when they are ready to accept orders.

With another month before completion and additional production time it will be atleast 1.5 month before they have units for sale. That means mid April or so.

Called EuroCarPhone today

Brian said that there will be a workaround for use with the Motorola phones. He said it would be included with the kit. All functionality should be operational. I discussed with him that my wife is now using a Motorola Bluetooth headset with her phone. He said that as long as the headset is off, once the phone is synced with the Argos unit in the car, whenever she gets in the car the Argos unit will query the phone and sync with it. Kits should be available next month.

Anybody try this? ^^ I don't like the little display unit you have to install. It should display the call info on the command screen...

Thinking points....

It doesn't look like the AIK can access the in-bumper antennas and booster amplifier of the cradle installed system. The cradle has a small recepticle for the antenna which connects it. I guess if you are in a reception area that is pretty good, you might not need it. If you can live with a more frequent battery discharge, the convenience of having a module like the AIK, where you are not dependent on a rapidly discontinued phone,( like my Moto v70), sold by MB at around $350, it might pay to get the Argos AIK. Now diagram that sentence.

That was the DIY kit published here several years ago. Only back then it cost around $40. It is a CAN box that clicks into the the Parrot system to simulate button presses via relays.

Because I did not invent the system I can not publish it here.

I do not believe I have a phone installed in my 2003 E500, and I definitely need a solution, besides the parrot can anyone give me a different solution. I like this AIK thing but will it work if I dont have a phone installed in my car. Please explain if you can, thanks.

YEs, it'll work without the OEM phone. That's why we're all waiting with anticipation...
