Chrome Headlight Rings .. Good or Bad?

I note in the E350 brochure that “chrome headlight rings” are
an option. Here’s MB's humble description of them:

“Available in sets of four, our chrome headlight rings
embolden the distinctive front end of your E-class.
In the process, the rings not only recast the grille and
surrounding area in a brighter light - they add yet
another sheen of elegance to the entire vehicle.”

Now, who wouldn’t want that?

My car will be black/black. Being just a lowly country boy, I kinda
like a fair amount of chrome, so I lean toward getting them.

BUT .. what do you guys think about them? And, by the way,
anyone know what they cost?

In my opinion, add on chrome equals ghetto.

Not a big fan of the look.

They fill up the spaces around the lights, they're thick and NOT elegant. They started as an aftermarket thing. The dealers jumped on them as a way to "pack" the car with high priced options on stock/showroom cars. Now I too see its listed in the brochure as Dealer Installed Options. Its like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa, or like those cheap aluminum foil burner bibs people used to put on their stovetop burners. Dealer overkill.

As for the door handle inserts you gotta be quite a knuckle dragger to scratch those finger indents in the body up. Not necessary.

Chrome covered mirrors? How about an aluminum foil Captain Video Space Helmet?

But what do I know?

On the right color car, like silver, I think they look good, covering up the black gaskets and dark space. I would avoid them on a black car.

It's one of those things that I like on someone else's car...not mine.

WOW! These answers have been less than encouraging.

So, I guess now I’ll scrap my plan for putting a squirrel
tail on the satellite radio antena, too.

Alone?

I like them. Got aftermarket trim rings for the front and rear of both of my cars. I think they look fine, not ghetto busters.

Sorry Jimbo, but I think you're definately in the minority on this one. But this is another one the many "to each his own" threads on this board. I've modded the hell out of my car and I'm sure there are people out there that don't like it.

To the original poster:

Do what you think looks good and makes you happy. You're the one drving it, not us.

Buy it. If you like it, keep it. If not, scrap them. Other people don't pay your bills, they don't make you happy...you do.

Seriously, if you feel you like the chrome trim, DO it. I know you just wanted various opinions, but you're the one whose opinion counts! LOL

I have to admit that I have them on my Alabaster White car and I like the way they look. I thought long and hard about it since I also tend to think that these modifications can make you look like poser.

Ultimately it is your choice, but I do agree that they look better or worse depending on the color of the car. I have seen it on silver cars and they look fine. I personally like how they look on a white car because it fills in the black gap around the headlights and the chrome matches the chrome on the grill and the bumper strips.

I got the rings free from my dealer anyway; I doubt that I would have paid for them. However, if you do get a set, don't get the set that has extra chrome where the headlight and the blinker are separated, they look bad. Just get the rings that go around the headlights.

I think that they look good on silver and white cars, I don't know how they would look on a black car. I saw the other chrome accessories for the taillights (way too much for me), for the mirrors (horrible!) and for the door handles (I did not care for them much).

In the end, it’s your car!

hmmmm.... hate to be one of the oddballs out here.. but I too put the rings on the front lights and the chrome mirror covers (from http://formymercedes.com/e-class_w211.asp) ... and I get a ton of compliments and thumbs up from other drivers .. (if you want to discount the thumbs up because most of them are taxi drivers and urban kids playing on the streets of NYC.. then you can. BUT.. I did get a number of admirers from a BMW M group meet two weekends ago at Floyd Bennet Field...

my car is silver and the black rubber gap around the lights really shows up.. probably not so bad for your black car.. I have also put clear side marker lights... so my car is rather monotone and the chrome is very subtle.. the chrome simply accents the other chrome strips on the bumper and grill.. as far as chrome mirrors.. they look awesome.. but it wouldn't work well on a lot of colors.

what wheels will you have on your car? I would think that a black car with just the rings on the front lights (not the rear!!!!) would look great.. and dare I say..the mirror covers would look good too?

best of luck

Not clear on what the “mirror covers” are.

Are they just a chrome frame that goes
around the outside of each side mirror?

I hadn’t thought about doing anything with
the mirrors, door handles, or other.

Mirror covers are polished chrome housing shaped devices that cover the plastic housing of your door mirrors so that none of your black paint on the mirror housing will show when standing in front of the car.

I have also seen small chrome bands that snap on from the glass side & leave all of the black paint visible except for a 1/2 inch band of chrome around the glass side of the plastic housing.

See Other Accessories here: http://www.parkplacestores-mb.com/chromoutmirc.html
