I really just did that as an experiment. It was cheap enough that I could afford to use it as a benchmark for what I really wanted. I realized that it was a little too loud for my taste. And I'm not THAT guy who buys the ebay tips and has them sticking out from underneath the rear skirt. Can't stand it, looks horrible IMO. Don't mean to offend those that have taken that route but yuck!

So, this really left me three options.

1. Use the stock exhaust, cutout the bumper and install tips
2. Replace the bumper with an AMG one and purchase the AMG exhaust
3. Buy the AMG exhaust and cutout the bumper

Option 1 seemed like the route I was gonna go all along. Option 2 was gonna cost a pretty penny and Option 3 seemed unlikely unless I fell into a deal on and AMG exhaust.

Luckily, I ran into a very motivated seller who hooked me up. We caught each other at the right time and made the deal happen.


By the way, my Magnaflow setup was sold to a member here in the W211 forum. A newbie who was looking for a little more grunt out of his E500. Funny thing, he thought it wasn't loud enough. To each his own, I guess.

Wish me luck guys and pray that I don't hack the crap out of my rear bumper.

Hmmmmm, now that you mention it......


The only thing left for me to do now is to loosen the front and rear license plate bolts. Pull the plate out 2 inches from the front and rear of the car. Drop an E55 between the license plates and tighten them back up.

Yep, I think that's next.

but i want it to look good...

Well,

The talked to the guy who's gonna do the fabrication on this. He says, it's gonna be around 300.00 to install the exhaust and do the cutouts. He's says that after he does the cutouts, he's gonna sand and paint the edges to try to make it look more finished. If it's less work than what's he anticipating, the price will be lower. Gonna make an appt for next week and I'll report back.

If I hate the way it turns out, looks like I'll be in the market for an E55 bumper.

14 hours and counting.

I have a 10:30 appt to get this installed. I think I've decided to remove the secondary cats and maybe even the resonator too.

Hey Benzo...good luck! Post pics as soon as you can...i'd like to see how the cut outs turned out. Gonna buy an AMG exhaust myself soon and I'm not sure if I should do the cut outs or just invest in the AMG bumper.

This is great! Then everybody can see a side by side of what a 1000.00 conversion looks like next to a 4000.00 conversion. I'm guessing that's what you'll total out of pocket cash will be after parts, paint and labor.

I'm sure yours will look sick. You're doing it the right way, I'm taking the more frugal approach.

Can't wait to see yours. Oh, mind posting what your total out of pocket is? I'm gonna be right around a grand with parts and labor.

Yeah, I was bummed. I could've either left the car overnight and picked it up early tomorrow or drop it off early tomorrow and pick it up tomorrow afternoon. Since I needed to car to drive back home after work, I decided to just hold off one more day. It's definitely going in tomorrow at 8:00 am.

Pics tomorrow after dinner sometime. Sound clips probably this weekend.
