E 320 --> New v/s Old - what is ideal?

Ready to make my 1st MB purchase. Considering new E 320. Around 53K. Found from Edmunds and Kelly book value of 2000 E 320 around 35K. Since have never owned MB before, any guidance from experienced E owners will be appreciated. Is old for 35K ideal or go for the new for 18K more on 1 car.

Dealers will likely be going very low on existing 2002 (W210 style) E-class stock.

A dealer in NYC sent out a mass email late last week promoting demos E320s with 9k miles for $40,900 and undriven E430sports from the 'last year' model/style for 8-10k UNDER *invoice*, so you can get an E430sport with heated seats and a sunroof for like $43,900 and you might be able to talk them down from there.

If you're not all hot for the latest-and-greatest style, it seems like a great way to pick up a new MB for a good price - its still a new car (do the 02s have the scheduled-maintenance-included deal for 4 years like 03s? I'd expect they do but you'd need to check)

iqguy, i would go for a 03 211 over a 02 because the look is nicer, and the biggest thing is the interior, we had to get our tele aid fixed in our e500, so we got a 01 e320 for a day, and it was ok.....the interior was no match at all, its like night and day, and also, the new 211 will last a long time, some dealers are discounting them now

This is kind of an off topic question. But I noticed on my 03' E500...there's not a full size spare. I know on my BMW there is one--its a 5th wheel....just like the other four. My 03' E has a cheap little spare wheel. I could have sworn there was a full size spare on my 99' E320. Am I wrong?

MB
your right, but mb didnt put another one because of 3 reasons, 1.....weight of the tire, price for putting a 5th one in, and the main reason is because they had a test, and less than 3 percent of all mb owners used there spare, ands thats the life of the vehicle...so thats whyand also, after 3-4 years, the tire gets dry, and it is no good anyway

If you are going to buy an '02 E-class, make sure you check out the www.autospies.com site, because they talk about the incentives that dealers are getting for clearing out '02s. It is pretty huge, so the $8-$10K under invoice is probably easy to do.

I agree with someguys here, if you try to get into a 2002 new or mildly used, you can save a lot of money, down side you have to take what they have, meaning no options on more or less equipment, unless you are lucky and find just what you want.
An E-class with 36k miles is not old at all.

If you just want to own a MB and do not want to spend a lot of money, I think the '02 MB is a good start. However, If you can afford to spend an extra $$$, I would go with the latest. MB dealers are willing to get rid of their '02 models. I would bargain like crazy to get the best deal.

The new E (211 ) definitely has much nicer interior I think compared to older models of E (96 to 02) The question is how reliable in general are old Es. (say a 2000 E with 40K miles)

have heard maintenance can be very expensive on MB.
Any experience from E users?

Wife has demanded a new E but am wanting to make sure.

We have a full-size in Canada (2003 E320), although the manual says not.

Amazingly there's still lots of storage space as well.

I think the full size would fit with the large space there. As to maintenance cost, here in the US, maintenance is included at no charge for the life of the warranty, 48 months, 50,000 miles. Tires, brake linings and consumables are not included. So, that should not be a factor with an '03 E class.

I personally did not buy the W210 because I didn't like the styling. The W211 will not undergo a change until 2006 or 2007, I think. So, get a new E and it will look new for years unless, of course, you prefer the styling of the W210.

Style and interior are better in new E and hence I am to ask for a $2500 off MSRP. If I am successful I will post it here.
