Hit a pot hole, tire gone, wheel bent
I would prefer not replacing all 4 tires, but unless I can find the tire, I am SOL. Does anyone know if another all season tire has a similar treadwear pattern? I also need a single wheel, what do these things cost at the "dealer" (yeah, I know too much).
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I had to replace my LF Michelin due to a 1/2 inch diameter lag bolt puncture & my dealer's price for the tire was really competitive.

Wheels and tires were off a new CLS 500, front tire is is a Michelin Pilot Sport 245/40 R18
This failure occured on the drive back on a day trip to Cerebon, Indonesia (about 220 kms outside of Jakarta) The failure occured about 100 kms in to the return trip back home, tires only have about 3400 total kms on them.
Any thoughts, it gave out at a speed of about 140 to 150km per hour, no problems it just veered a little off to the left. Changed it with the doughnut spare and limped home at 80 km a hour.
Put the pic with the pen next to the failure so you can actually guage how big this hole is.
Any ideas?

I did want the Michelin Pilot Sports, but they are more than I want to spend right now.
So if anyone does want the 3 245-40 18 Conti's let me know.
I am going to make a claim and see if or when they respond. I'll keep you posted.
We have to pay for the damaged wheel and the damaged tire, they are "replacing" the other 3 as a "courtesy". This is a total surprise and what I call customer service.
Thanks to EuroMotor Cars in Gaithersburg, MD.
I'll let you know if the county pays for the repair.

who is your SA there? I go there as well.
But in all fairness, they did not have to replace all 4 tires, and their attitude was helpful and they "cut me a break" on the cost of the wheels.
Now I will submit a claim to the state and see if I can get reimbursed
. I'll keep you posted
We have an 03 E320 with the standard 225/55-16 tires with 82k miles. I have driven it cross-country and hit some nasty potholes. No tire or wheel damage. Our roads in South Florida are not pot hole ravaged because we get no freezing weather.
You are paying the hidden price of the low profile tire fashion IMHO. Not a criticism, just a lesson that you may not be willing to pay for your next vehicle. Because of the large brake calipers on your vehicle, you are probably unable to fit the car with 16 inch rims even if you wanted to because of clearance issues.
If the wheels were forged, at least they would be less susceptible to impact damage. But they are cast; less expensive, beautiful intricate design, and more susceptible to impact damage.
Thank you for offering to update us on your claim to the State. Good luck!
Being an ex Rockville resident myself, between the overlapping state, Montgomery County, and Rockville City governments.....I hope that your claim incident does not end up falling under city jurisdiction...the city government was quite the beaurocracy a few years back.
Your post, and another similar post from New York a couple of weeks back motivated me to purchase a complete spare set of wheels/with Michelin tires off an 06 CLS in event I ever need them. I'm kind of starting to feel like a mini tire rack, now having my complete 07 sport OEM 10 spoke wheel/tire set, a spare CLS wheel/tire set, and the CLS wheels on my car....fortunately I have lots of indoor storage space.
Best of luck with the re-embursement.
I have complained to MB several times, claiming that the tyre/wheel combo is not fit for purpose, but have only encountered indifference. It is gratifying to hear I am not the ony owner to have experienced these problems.
