Hit a pot hole, tire gone, wheel bent

Tonight , on the way to dinner we hit a deep pothole in the middle of the street. Now we need a tire and a wheel for the E350 Sport 4-Matic. Tire Rack is out of the Continentals that came on the car.

I would prefer not replacing all 4 tires, but unless I can find the tire, I am SOL. Does anyone know if another all season tire has a similar treadwear pattern? I also need a single wheel, what do these things cost at the "dealer" (yeah, I know too much).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Don't mix & match tires ever. "Similar" is NOT "The Same". You will adversely affect the car's handling & control. There are other on line tire suppliers & other independent tire shops. Don't forget to try several local MB Dealer's parts departments... they sell the tires too, & if they don't have it in stock MBUSA might & it only takes a day to get.

I had to replace my LF Michelin due to a 1/2 inch diameter lag bolt puncture & my dealer's price for the tire was really competitive.

I would go with Barry's advise; don't mix and match you are only asking for trouble. When I got my car my dealer offered me wheel and tire protection for the entire lifetime of the car. I paid about $800 for it and every time I have a problem with the tire and/or wheel the dealer will fix it for me free of charge. See if your dealer offers something similar. The roads are really bad here in New Jersey so it is an added plus for me.

Thanks for your advice guys

I'll call MB dealer. Tire Rack carries the tire but they are out of stock (back order).

I agree that tires should not be mixed and matched.

Thanks

Well at least you know what you hit, I am still wondering..................

Wheels and tires were off a new CLS 500, front tire is is a Michelin Pilot Sport 245/40 R18

This failure occured on the drive back on a day trip to Cerebon, Indonesia (about 220 kms outside of Jakarta) The failure occured about 100 kms in to the return trip back home, tires only have about 3400 total kms on them.

Any thoughts, it gave out at a speed of about 140 to 150km per hour, no problems it just veered a little off to the left. Changed it with the doughnut spare and limped home at 80 km a hour.

Put the pic with the pen next to the failure so you can actually guage how big this hole is.

Any ideas?

That may be a feasible way to go ,however, it may help to be a patient person. New Jersey takes forever to fix the streets, and then takes forever to respond to a claim......

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions

I now have 3 used (9000 miles) Contis that came on the car. I am stuck with having to buy 4 new tires and one rim. Total cost of the rim $390, tires Pirelli PZero Nero M&S $670; and an alignment, balancing and mounting, so I am out close to $1200.

I did want the Michelin Pilot Sports, but they are more than I want to spend right now.

So if anyone does want the 3 245-40 18 Conti's let me know.

I am going to make a claim and see if or when they respond. I'll keep you posted.

Issue resolved partially

My dealer is replacing all 4 tires with Michelin's that came as an option to the Contis.

We have to pay for the damaged wheel and the damaged tire, they are "replacing" the other 3 as a "courtesy". This is a total surprise and what I call customer service.

Thanks to EuroMotor Cars in Gaithersburg, MD.

I'll let you know if the county pays for the repair.

Get a police report, the claims move faster (at least here in NJ they do). I have resorted to driving very slowly on side streets. It hasn't been that cold here, hasn't snowed much, yet you can pass a road you were on last night and by the following morning there is a 10 inch deep, 12 inch wide pothole in the same spot. It must be gremlins.

Update

They fixed the car. But I had to buy 2 wheels, one was ever so slightly, but visibly, bent. So now I am out about $1400. I paid about $400 for 2 wheels, $355 for a tire ($100 over the Tire Rack price), thanks to greed, now I understand the term "stealership". Yeah, I know they have to make a buck.

But in all fairness, they did not have to replace all 4 tires, and their attitude was helpful and they "cut me a break" on the cost of the wheels.

Now I will submit a claim to the state and see if I can get reimbursed.

I'll keep you posted

This is a wonderful racket for the tire makers; more expensive tires that wear out faster and are much more susceptible to impact damage. These very low profile tires are designed for the much better maintained (because of higher taxes) European roadways IMHO.

We have an 03 E320 with the standard 225/55-16 tires with 82k miles. I have driven it cross-country and hit some nasty potholes. No tire or wheel damage. Our roads in South Florida are not pot hole ravaged because we get no freezing weather.

You are paying the hidden price of the low profile tire fashion IMHO. Not a criticism, just a lesson that you may not be willing to pay for your next vehicle. Because of the large brake calipers on your vehicle, you are probably unable to fit the car with 16 inch rims even if you wanted to because of clearance issues.

If the wheels were forged, at least they would be less susceptible to impact damage. But they are cast; less expensive, beautiful intricate design, and more susceptible to impact damage.

Thank you for offering to update us on your claim to the State. Good luck!

RE: Wheels and New Tires

While completely understanding your frustration, I think $1,400 for a new set of Michelins, 2 new rims, and an alignment from MB is actually a pretty o.k. deal.

Being an ex Rockville resident myself, between the overlapping state, Montgomery County, and Rockville City governments.....I hope that your claim incident does not end up falling under city jurisdiction...the city government was quite the beaurocracy a few years back.

Your post, and another similar post from New York a couple of weeks back motivated me to purchase a complete spare set of wheels/with Michelin tires off an 06 CLS in event I ever need them. I'm kind of starting to feel like a mini tire rack, now having my complete 07 sport OEM 10 spoke wheel/tire set, a spare CLS wheel/tire set, and the CLS wheels on my car....fortunately I have lots of indoor storage space.

Best of luck with the re-embursement.

I have lost 5 of these same tyres (and one wheel) to pot holes, all having burst without evidence of a puncture. The roads in Sydney are awful but I know of no other tyre that has such susceptibility to damage. Perhaps that is why Continental has withdrawn them.

I have complained to MB several times, claiming that the tyre/wheel combo is not fit for purpose, but have only encountered indifference. It is gratifying to hear I am not the ony owner to have experienced these problems.
