More than likely you will need to extend/lubricate the sealing boot on the rod for the door lock knob. Common problem, PM your email address and I will forward the DTB explaining the problem and fix along with a WIS to remove the door lining to gain access for repair.

just helping out my father, I don't drive one.

don't get me wrong, mercedes styling is wonderful! always ahead of the curve and leaving the japanese to play catch up almost all the time.

but in terms of reliability, I would not drive one. no way.

Then you might want to change your profile, the one in the left side of your posts where it states:
"Vehicle I drive: e class".

Even more ironic is your member nick...."eclass fetish". And, yet, you won't drive one

It is my assumption that the application of sliding compound would have been sufficient as instructed by the DTB. Anyway, the part # is A2117200335 check with KYBENZ https://mbworld.org/forums/members/28130-kybenz.html and https://mbworld.org/forums/classifieds/236659-oem-parts-cheaper-update-please-read.html for their cost and compare to the dealer quote, if less see if the dealer will match or better.
