LUXURY TAX Gone or Not? (1-1-2003)

My dealer mentioned that luxury tax is not going away in 2003.
She mentions it is becoming 2% over 42K instead of being 3% on 40K...? ? ?

Read on this forum about there being no luxury tax in '03.
Any ideas?

If we can believe the IRS: "The luxury tax is scheduled to expire after 2002."

it should be gone

IQguy,

In your case. get a new car on 1/3/2003 -- it is a done deal. so you don't have to worry about luxury tax. if there is no luxury tax, it is good; otherwise, pay for it and get a new car.

There will be no U.S. luxury tax beginning in 2003, unless Congress gets greedy once again!

Please report back on what it is that your sales person uses as a defense for such a statement.
I'd really like to know.
This is, after all, her profession.
She ought to know what's going on like the back of her hand.
And if she's mistaken about this, what else does that imply?

It is intersting, but when I was just shopping for my car, I went in to 4 different Mercedes dealers in N. California in October and not one salesperson I spoke to knew that the luxury tax was going away in January!! They all thought I was crazy. You would think they would know this information at this point

Cool Perspective is differen ?

mco, you raise a valid point.

People who BUY mercedes v/s people who SELL mercedes,
Despite the common connection of the 3 pointed star,
there is a lot of difference in one's perspective (and inclination..)

True,

it's always the consumer(enthusiast) who knows before the dealer.

Yes its gone after 1/1/03 and you are right the dealers are all likely to be "playing stupid".

Its very common knowledge. Don't be surprised, why would they tell you that you get a bonus for buying later?

Personally I would not buy until 1/1/03 unless I was getting a deep discount which might be a serious possibility with lots of cars around and lots of people who are waiting to avoid the tax.

The inventory glut may dry up fast when all of those people who waited show up ready to buy.

(To be honest I wish I would have waited. On the other hand the car I ordered before considering the issue was sitting there and I couldn't resist. Patience is not my strong suit.)

Oh, I couldn't agree more, Benzoid. I suspect that's part of it.
If I were running a dealership, however, I'd place more of an emphasis on building client trust. When I interact with salespeople who are either knowingly dishonest, or just plain uninformed about basic issues, I have no interest in dealing with those people again.
In my line of work, if you can't be counted on to be reliable, you're out of the field. And if you lie, you can go to jail.

Selling cars is not neurosurgery, but many customers at high end dealers are intelligent, accomplished people who smell BS from a distance. Personally I would think it would be bad for business (unless your competition is equally unscrupulous or incompetent).
