Nav Destination Entry while moving, new 08???

OK, i hate to post if this followup has been covered, but i'm unsure and can't find.

As most of us know, the latest update to comand and nav disc prevented you from entering destination while moving. (i have an 04 E500 with the latest Nav disc and comand software as of December 07)...however, mine is in the shop and the loaner i got is an 08 with only a couple hundred miles on it. Comand screens look same, but i am able to enter destinations on the fly. Is this a recent update after the backlash of customer sentiment?

Would love to know if i can get them to update my comand again while it's there.
Thanks.

You should ask them to go through the version coding. Euro cars come with the setting that allows destination entry in motion. If it is allowed on a new car, the shop should be able to code your car back with SDS.

Actually if your car originally allowed it (from factory), it sounds like an issue with the map update, it should have preserved settings like this.

When I had the COMAND update installed JUL07 (W211589142200) it did not affect the ability for my passenger to enter a destination while in motion. I suggest you discuss this with the shop foreman.

I was not too happy about losing this ability when I read about it in the other "Nav update" threads. I needed the new maps so I went ahead with the update. I was pleasantly surprised to find that entry while driving is still there.

This confirms the experience from previous posts, for some reason the settings sometimes get changed and sometimes they don't. I guess MB should take care of the necessary SDS coding in this case. I doubt they would do it in Europe though if the car warranty has expired.

My battery went dead, i had it replaced and ever since then, i have not been able to enter destination while the car is in motion. How did you update the Nav maps/system?

The dealership did it.

2005 or newer COMAND after update will allow you to enter destination while car is moving. 2004 or late 2003 will not.

Do you mean "if not version coded to allow destination entry in motion again"?

I am anxiously watching this thread, as I have a dealer service appt next week to have processor software, headunit software and maps updated on my CPO 2004 E500. Wondering if I'll still have "nav on the fly" capabilities or need to ask them to do any kind of "version coding" or "Star diagnostics" changes...

I am updating from and currently using DVD 2006.1. From jd986s post, I didn't know if update from DVD 2004 and late 2003 or update for MY 2004 and late 2003 COMAND systems would not allow "nav on the fly".

Thanks for any clarification and assistance. I'm new to Mercedes-Benz and the MBWorld Forum and find you all to be very helpful and informative.

From one of the earlier posts one could interpret you would not lose address entry in motion, I'm not sure when this could happen but there are members who have lost the option.

I'd suggest you tell your service guys that you currently have the option to enter address in motion and ask them to take care it remains after the update. They should then check it and version code it again with Star if necessary.

If they say its not possible after the update, don't pay the full price, say you need part of the money for another shop where they know how it needs to be done.

Thanks, Diesel Benz. I'm hoping that there won't be any cost due to the fact that it is a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle that we've only had for a couple of weeks. Since the out-of-date navigation wasn't discovered in their Pre-Delivery Inspection, the selling dealer (different from my local servicing dealer) has agreed to pay for the updates via purchase order.

This and other threads on this Forum informed me of the current database and educated me on how to pursue the navigation updates. I'm particularly appreciative of you, konigstiger and the others who contribute your experience for the benefit of us new guys.

A quick follow-up to the above posts:

I took my (new to me) 2004 E500 in to the dealer this week to have the nav updated (my CPO vehicle came with DVD 2006.1). They did the trunk processor and headunit updates and I installed the newest nav DVD 2008 ver 7.0. After this was accomplished, destinations CAN be input while in motion (and it didn't take any Star diagnostics manipulation to make it so).

Thanks again to the contributors on this forum, I was able to talk intelligently with my SA and the SF. The latter actually drove me in the car while I, armed with a post from MBWorld, was able to get ETA to display after their best and brightest were unable to do so.

...all a bunch of BS...ever since 2004 mercedes added the possibility to DISable destinationentries while in motion because of st00pid countries like the netherlands where one has to pay additional luxury tax on a car-nav system when one can enter destinations while moving...so that issue of which some of you seem to be thinking it is all new, aleady exists for more then 4 years (almost 5) and is a SIMPLE variable setting in the COMAND headunit (NOT in the nav drive)...if your car no longer allows you to enter an address while driving - go to your dealership and have them enable that setting with stardiagnose in the comand (again - NOT in the nav drive) - as easy as can be!

greetingz,

Thankyou! Been said a thousand times in several different ways but here’s the thing, it is not the owners who do not comprehend this but rather the dealers who either are not capable of understanding it or more than likely attempting to squeeze some extra coin out of an unsuspecting owner.

I was never too good with history in the school, nice to learn some of it concerning the Netherlands now at least.

OK, mea culpa.

I CAN only enter destinations while in motion that are already in memory or are POIs in the local area. The letter menu is blanked out gray so that I can't manually input other cities or destination info while the vehicle is moving. Oh well, at least I got the ETA to display on that ride with the SF!

Looks like it's another trip to the dealer for that version coding through Star Diagnostics that was mentioned earlier...

The excellent SF at my local servicing dealer rode with me in the car again today and enabled full destination entry in motion via Star Diagnostics. Only took a few minutes and there was no charge.

I wrote an "attaboy" letter about him to the SM!! Another satisfied customer (hope it stays that way)...

Good that you got this fixed and thanks for reporting how it went. Always easier for others that have the same issue to refer to your case and the expert that was able to fix the issue. Another dealer cannot say simply "they can't change it".
