E320 CDI Mileage
Hello everyone,
I'd like to start this thread for folks to share mpgs they get from their I6 E320 CDIs.
I have a E320 CDI 2006 with 11,000 miles and get about 26mpg on mixed highway+city driving. The tops I ever get on all of highway driving is 28mpg.
Googling around brings up numbers like 34-40mpg, is that true?
thanks,
-terry

I have an 05 E320 CDI estate (wagon) with 40k miles. I'm in the UK so our gallons are different but in general driving I get 33-35mpg and on a long run if I stay around 70mph I can just about coax 40mpg which gives me about 650 miles to a tank. This is actual measured mpg rather than what the trip computer shows, although I have noticed it's only out by about 1mpg.
I think this is OK given the power of the engine and the weight of the car and I have been driving more carefully recently as diesel has hit £1.30/litre here (around $12US a gallon), meaning the car costs more than £100 to fill
It does sound like yours is low, so I agree you should get it checked out.
HTH.

Thanks everyone. Keep those number coming in. It is helpful statistics.
As some members have pointed out - I should get the car checked out but alas there are not that many good diesel techs at the MB dealerships for modern diesels. I am her in the SF bay area, california. They just hear 28 mpg and of course that is good compared to any gas engine so they don't discuss this further.
Since there are very few CDIs here - the dealerships barely see one - once in a while.
Can someone recommend a competent dealership/tech?
thanks,
-terry

I have a 06 CDI. I live out in the country and do little city driving. I changed from 5W40 M1 to ELF (now Total) 0W30 about 3000 miles ago. It added about 2 MPG to my average. Since the oil change I have averaged 37 MPG with the worst tank 35 and the best 39. This is calculated.

Have you searched this yet on the forum? There have been several posts on mileage. I have a 05 CDI, stock, 18 inch kept @ 34 PSI , 78,000 miles and consistently get city 27-28mpg and highway 35-38mpg depending on how hard I push the car. I try to keep the revs below 2000 rpm. I believe someone on this forum once advised w/ diesels to "drive w/the torque". Makes so much sense now. I have also noticed a huge penalty w/ hwy driving if I'm past 70mph but it's so hard not to in the CDI. Hope this helps.

As far as highway speed and RPM, this should apply much more to the older I6 5 speed models, since the new 7 speed transmissions keep the highway RPM very low, allowing higher speeds with little affect on fuel consumption.

2005 E320 CDI
I've had my '05 CDI a month and average 27 in town. I haven't run it out on the interstate but will do so this weekend. I had the dealer do a B service right when I got it, and I add a cup of DieselKleen when I fill 'er up.

I have 112,000 miles on my 2005 CDI. My average over the last 51,000 miles is 34.5 mpg. My mix of driving is 70% hwy 30% city. On 100 mile hwy drives I have regularly seen 37 even 38 mpg. Believe it or not the car seems to get the best fuel mpg at a steady cruise of 80mph.

my '06 just hit 20k, I tend to get at least 34 mpg on the highway and about 24 mpg in the city. my average over the last 6,000 miles is about 29 mpg, about 60% hwy, 40% city. The best I've ever gotten was 36.1 mpg going to Dallas, avg. speed about 72 mph.

Can you tell me a name of the service advisor and tech that you consult at smythe. I'd like to take my vehicle there.

Our '05 just hit 26K miles. Worst mileage on a tank of fuel was 21 - short trips to and from office in the winter w/ no highway miles. Best tank was 38 mpg, which was Lansing, MI to Dayton, OH and back @ 75 mph.

The diesel tech at Beshoff Motors, BTW is Ray Abdullah. He is a competent and experienced diesel tech but it seems like they don't get that many CDIs in for service.

2007 E320 Bluetec
My '07 Bluetec has almost 12,000 miles on it
and is avg about 30 mpg since i drove it off the lot. driving is about 50/50 city/hwy. I'll get 34-36 mpg or so on hwy at 75mph. I hate sitting and traffic and watching the mpg go down, lol.

The worst I have seen is 32MPG average, and I get 35-40 with mostly highway driving. 2005 E320CDI.
