Rear main seal is leaking already!!!??

I am a bit dissapointed, after finishing with a break job and oil change I was ready to put the plastic back on and noticed this!

It looks like a rear main seal, I am really hoping it's not! Any ideas?

Have you noticed any increase in consumption? Has the dash indicated that you need to add oil? Sounds like a trip to the dealer if it is a seal. Perhaps a good independent mechanic possibly who knows diesels.

I would wipe it off and clean the area, then drive the car for a week or so and then inspect the area again. It may have just weeped a bit, especially if there are no drips on the ground (assuming its parked in the same spot all the time), which is considered normal for most vehicles...

I would spray it clean with carb cleaner then watch for source. It looks like it might be comming from the banjo bolt in the photo but difficult to tell in the pic.

Yep, wiped it off. I will reopen it in couple of days to see where exactly its coming from. There was a wet spot on the bottom of the plastic cover. At this point the leaking does not seem to be major, but it is still disappointing that seals on 2005 MB car are giving out already! It is definitely tranny fluid, because it's clear, the engine oil is usually black. Would I get a low warning for tranny fluid? How do I check if it's low?

You have to buy a special dipstick tool that you can use to check the level of the tranny fluid.

A couple of places to get the tranny dipstick tool (besides the dealer) are http://www.baumtools.com and http://www.asttools.com.

BTW, if you were using the siphon method to change your oil, you wouldn't have found this issue until there was ATF all over your garage floor!

Good luck and I hope it's an easy fix.

Regards,
paul...

No fluid low light for the tranny, but the shifting will be effected, and you should notice some "bucking" in the shifting at speeds around 5 mph and below...

I have to say that I did notice a change in shifting, under 5mph when it's cold the car does not roll very smooth, I guess bucking would be a proper term! I will stop driving the car, and get the tool to measure ATF.

I was just wondering which seal are you expecting to be leaking?

unless i am completley off I think its in the area of bolt # 50. I just really hope I don't have to shell out thousands for the tranny to be removed

Yes that is the tool. You could have a leak in the front pump gasket area or the torque converter seal. This is really abnormal. Do you still have warranty?.
