How to reset Transmission ECU
for the past couple of days I've been upshifting manually before 2000 rpm in the quest to get better mpg but I think now the car has adapted to this habit ... Its automatically in Drive mode upshifts before 2k rpm ... The downside of these could be:
a) tranny prone to more strain from the crankshaft - could reduce its life
b) vibrations could cause mountings to break etc (in the long run)
c) I think 4matics will have a higher impact than 2 wheel drives
So, call me crazy ... but how can I reset the transmission's ECU or processor that controls upshifts/ downshifts ... I heard somewhere it can be reset with a combination of C/S button with something else pressed together for 3 secs ??
thanks all

a) Torque from the engine could possibly reduce the life of the transmission. Max torque will happen at a certain RPM under full open throttle. So, as long as you are not applying WOT, MAX torque will not be produced. Regardless, the transmission is engineered to take all the torque the 350 can produce, ,and the 350 engine produces it's max torque higher than 2000 RPM. Really a non-issue.
b) Unless the drivetrain produced a certain, very severe, vibration/harmonic at around 2k RPM there's nothing to be concerned with here. And if it did produce some such vibration/harmonic - enough to break things, you'd feel it well before anything broke.
c) I think I understand what you mean here. 4Matic cars have more traction available than RWD cars so more, if not all, available torque from the engine can be used to propel the car. In other words; while in 1 gear in a RWD car 260 Ft/Tq may be enough to overwhelm available traction from one tire - resulting in tire spin (and the traction control engaging) - so it's quite possible that not all 260 Ft/Tq is being used to move the car. 4M cars have an additional contact patch from a front tire so that same 260 Ft/Tq may not be enough to cause tire spin; all 260 are being fed through the transmission for use to propel the car. Again though, moot point: the transmission and the rest of the driveline are engineered to handle the torque.
Don't sweat it.
To reset the transmission controller: turn key to "Run" position, press accellerator completely to the floor and hold for 5 seconds, release pedal while key is still in Run position, then turn key to off. Wait 10 or so seconds. Trans should be reset.

RE: Trans Reset
To add to the last post:
To reset the transmission controller: turn key to "Run" position, press accelerator completely to the floor and hold for 5 seconds, release accelerator pedal while key is still in Run position, then turn key to off, leave key in ignition, wait 2 minutes for the ECU reset to complete. You will hear some noises when the reset completes. 10 seconds will not do it.
If you just drive it normally for a bit, it should relearn how to shift per your driving style.

from what i read on here and other benz sites the key should be turned to the run position then the petal pressed all the way to the flor for 15 seconds the turn the key to the off position and wait 2 min and it "should" be reset.
all i can say is try both and see what works.

Again, what I read was:
- Turn key to ignition (don't turn engine on)
- Press the pedal all the way down for 5 seconds
- Turn key to off (leave key in)
- Release pedal
- Wait for at least 2 minutes

I meant I still couldn't get to reset the transmission... shifting hasn't changed a bit ... followed the exact sequence listed by you above, would the procedure differ for a 4matic ?

Try turning it to position 1. The position where if the car was running it would stop the engine but not kill the radio.
Every thing else is as you say. It works on the w210 4matic for sure and I saw a very significant difference in up shift and kickdown points. Changed the whole character of the car from fuddy duddy to BMW like.
However, your symptoms sound more severe and there might be a problem. Even at its worst I've never got the feeling of the engine lugging, just lethargy.

Reset TCU
Get in the car, close the door, turn the key to the on position,---not to run--- ,just to the position that all the lights come on,the reason for this will be obvious in a second!!!!!!!!!!Step all the way down to the floor on the gas pedal(reason why you do not want it running) and keep your foot floored, while keeping it to the floor, wait 15 seconds, still keeping it to the floor, turn the key to OFF.Do not remove the key yet.
Now wait a few seconds and let your foot off the pedal. Now sit there for 2-3 minutes.Remove the key,and then exit the car. Please follow these instructions to the letter, some people have been known to not read the caveat about the engine should not be running and sit there with it floored and on the park position rev limiter and wonder why the engine shook and cut out at 4000 rpm.....
Also some cars that have been driven in a stately manner will go from very docile shift points back to the much firmer higher rpm factory settings,so use you foot accordingly.
some cars wake up more then others in response to the reset.
While you are waiting a few minutes to go for a drive, take that time to check your oil, examine your belt, look around and enjoy day.

Just to double check, I should floor it to the extent that the kick-down switch is depressed right ?
Also, I heard to reset the command console keep 3, 6, 9 pressed ? Does anyone know how to do that and what can I achieve by resetting it (any new features I can enable ?? .. *wish*)
thanks

Unhooking
the battery negative lead will not reset the trans adapt values for the tcu.
Follow the diy, make sure the doors are closed. And the engine is not running, just to the on position(the one where all the lights are on on the dash cluster)

A sampling from another respected forum, just one of hundreds of replies to the reset procedure when done properly.
"THIS WORKS LIKE A GOOD KICK UP THE ***. I JUST READ THIS TODAY AND WENT OUT AND DID IT. MY 99 E430 IS LIKE A BRAND NEW CAR. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FIRMER AND THROTTLE RESPONSE IS IMMEDIATE. I KNOW IT DOESN'T GIVE YOU MORE HORSESPOWER, BUT IF SOMEONE TOOK MY CAR AWAY AND SAID THEY PUT IN A BIGGER CHIP OR SOME OTHER SNAKE OIL TREATMENT, I WOULD HAVE BELIEVED THEM BECAUSE I CAN FEEL AN EXTRA 30 HORSEPOWER, SO TO SPEAK. WAKE YOUR V8 E KLASSE UP GUYS.
ANOTHER GREAT RESPONSE FROM OHLORD."
Resetting a trans that has adapted to sedate driving style back to factory shift points and rpm's really wakes up some cars and the owners feel it is like a new car.
