2006 E500 - Service D

I purchased an '06 E500 last week .. car had just under 18K miles ..

Display reads that Service D is past due 90 days ... (the car was lease return end of June ... Auctioned in Oct ... and Dealer had it since beginning Nov ..

First thing I did was change Oil ... looked really dark .. will send it in for an analysis .. (yeah . maybe I should have done this before purchasing???)

Now ... additionally the items listed in FSS are 2,4,9,12 and 14

Via Maintenance booklet all look about right (either 2 years or 26,000) . but item 2???? That's supposed to be at 52K miles ??? Why is it showing up now in FSS? ... I don't want to think it .. but has the odometer been tampered with?

You can take it to the dealer and have it connected to SDS. This will show the FSS history including how long the car went when it got its first service, if it was overdue by mileage/time, etc. Also, odometer tampering is not likely, but possible. Again, SDS would help with this as well because the mileage is stored in several modules in the car. Someone would have to be a professional to have tampered with it and it not cause EIS/ASSYST/Instrument Cluster discrepancies which SDS could help determine.

I would assume it probably got its first service on time, but was late on the second service time-wise, but not mileage wise.

Thanx for response ... Looking at FSS I see

Service Items ....

2 4 9 12 14

Additional Items ...

1 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 20

I don't even see a 20 in the maintenance manual ...

Also current mileage is 19,279 .. The FSS reads service in ..

+5,380 miles
- 93 Days

Shouldn't current mileage and FSS due mileage add up to 26,000?

Not necessarily. The Flexible Service System is dymanic. It adjusts the mileage according to driving habits including the percentage of cold starts (i.e. how many times the engine is started at less than 70şF compared to close to operating temperature), length of trips, etc. My E55 AMG was serviced and started the service interval at 13,000 miles but the interval actually ended up being over 15,000 because the way the car was driven. So based on what the car has endured since the last service will manipulate the service interval mileage. According to some documentation I have read, the service interval in some cases can even be doubled under the correct conditions, or reduced dramatically as well.

If it were my car, I would not be concerned with it and just perform the services - that way you know what you are starting from.

Mercedes has changed their services to only encompass A and B services. They do not go by the D, E, etc and longer.

I was half joking on the odometer tampering ... the car interior just doesn't show any wear .. so it does look the part ..

In the engine compartment the plastic engine cover .. air filter housing has what appears to be a yellowish junk around the seams .. is this common for the 500's?

As for codes .. yes. I was planning to take it down to dealer .. get brake fluid flushed .. I like to work on my cars ... always have just don't have that much time anymore ... so aside from oil change and filters .. etc I'll let dealer handle the rest .. unless I find a good MB indy in jersey

Not sure about the yellow stuff you are seeing. I have never owned/worked on an E500 so I am not sure what that could be.

I think it's a good idea to have the dealer do it. And depending on your dealer, you can drive a new MB while they are working on it (as a loaner).

Polar Bear has already said everything I would say, so I simply express my agreement with him.

The only extra advice I would offer is to check to see what motor oil your dealer uses, many dealers vary, and all oils are not created equal.

I used 0-w40 as per MB ... But dealer wants to use 5-w40 ... Says they only use the 0 on AMG models ... I'm still scratching my head on that one ... And that's why certain items I prefer to do myself ...

I believe both are fine for an E500:
http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

If you are from Jersey, I would use the 0W40 oil for winter, perhaps the dealer only had 5W40 oil that is approved for diesels too (229.51)?

From the link you should find both 0W and 5W oil types for an AMG engine, although quite many are not approved for AMG.

Yeah - you have to sometimes go back over their work unfortunately. My dealer filled my car over by one quart last time.

Mobil 1 5w-40 is 229.51 approved, and is only for use in diesel models with DPF. Tell your dealer he is voiding people's warranty, or call MBUSA.

You need to use a 229.5 oil, so M1 0w-40 is the correct one if you want a mobil product.

Thanks I had a dealer tell me the same stupid thing. I took the car to another dealer and they put in my 0W-40 229.5 Mobil one oil
