Video:E55 exhaust, secondary cat and resonator removal.
As some of you know, I've recently removed my secondary cats and resonator and replaced it with an x-pipe. I already had the E55 AMG mufflers but I was looking for a wee more grunt. I feel I got exactly the tone I was looking for. Not too loud (like my magnaflow setup) not too soft. And there is absolutely no drone inside the cabin at all.
Not sure what happened on my first launch. Car didn't take off as it normally does. Weird. Anyway, the next two launches were better. I stink at camera work and it appears that the camera may have been a little too far away but you get a real good sense of the tone in the last 5 seconds of the video.
Enjoy.

Sounds sick!! I was expecting it to be louder... do you find this as the perfect balance for you? My AMG mufflers are going on soon and I'll need to make a decision. I was originally thinking just the x-pipe.

I'm thrilled with the way it turned out. And there is absolutely NO droning inside the cabin. Which was very important to me.

RE: Exhaust Mods
From the sound and look of it, I'd say you have created a bonafide Mercedes Hot Rod. It sounds very good, particularly if you have no "drone" issues.
Curious whether removal of the secondary cats provided a SOTP power gain, it should in theory lower back pressure a little.
Nice work!

Thanks, gents.
It may be placebo, but I think I feel a little more torque in the SOTP. I'm getting awfully close to making a decision on headers or not. Stay tuned.
I'll also try to get a better sound clip with the mic near the rear of the car, like in the last few seconds of the above video. I find myself accelerating just a touch harder from stop lights to hear the low end grunt. Very addictive.

Good lord, that sounds frickin awesome! Nice job Clay and can't wait for you to slap on those headers! One question though, now that you've added the airbox, exhaust, and soon to be headers...wouldn't you want to update your ECU? Not sure if those will all make a difference.

C'mon man. You of all people should know that I don't half-*** stuff.
Oh except for that fact that I've dumped more money into this box of bolts than what an actual E55 would've cost me.
I am not a smart man, Jen-nay.

Sounds AMAZING Benz-O, car looks better and better every time you post
BTW, what I THINK W211 Ryda meant was that now that you've added the exhaust and airbox, maybe you should REFLASH your ECU to accompany the new mods...Like the mods which came after the ECU tune...Lol I think that's what he meant if that made any sense.

The problem with getting my ECU re-tuned is that the company that did it, Euro Elites (Evotech), is no longer in business. Normally, tuners will do re-flashes for about 100.00, but I'd have to switch to another tuner entirely, so I'm looking at another grand or so, for little to no gains over what I have now.

I recently acquired an ’04 E500 that is too quiet so I have a few questions. I haven’t been under the car yet but I see in an exhaust diagram that it originally came with one center muffler and two rear mufflers. You say you replaced the secondary cats and resonator with an x-pipe. Do you mean that center muffler? And is there any problem passing MD emissions? I wouldn’t mind something a little louder than that. I’m thinking about replacing all three mufflers with straight pipe for either a 60's small block sound or a late model Mustang GT/Cobra note.

Where in MD are you? If you can get to Frederick, I can put you in touch with the shop that did mine. Price was good too.
Thank you sir. It's the EXACT sound I was hoping for. Has a nice growl but absolutely zero droning inside the cabin. Which was very important to me.
