Carbon Fiber Interior Project

Among my other projects, Vogtland 4Matic lowering (in progress) and (E63 wheel w/ funtioning paddle shift (completed) I have just purchased MBTEK's birdseye maple trim from the classified sections here on the forums. I will be working in conjuction with Paul and his group IGT to get this project done right. I will post before and after pictures and of course installed pics when the work is all finished. I will see if Paul would be nice enough to take some shots during the actual process if that is possible to share w/ you guys. Keep in mind that this is an 08 model, so the sliding cover for the cup holder console will also be getting the carbon fiber treatment. It will be the first I've ever seen it done on so I'm hoping all will go well with that peice in particular. parts will be sent out sometime late next week so the process can get under way! Check back for more info in the coming weeks.

Dude great work! Are they wrapping the stock pieces or creating new using the parts you provided?

They will be covering the stock peices as I can't see spending 6-8 thousand for molds to be made off the existing peices. Some people may say its a short cut but who the hell would know the difference anyhow? I mean, maybe in terms of weight reduction it makes sense but how much does all that trim really weigh? Haha, now I'm thinking.... but seriously, it just doesn't seem justified. So yes, the existing trim will be covered. This, I am told, is about a 3-4 week process. I would imagine that to have all new trim made from the existing pieces would take quite a bit longer and although I do have the luxury of time (this is a second set) I would be able to wait for it, but I just wouldn't want to pay that kind of money. I am hoping that based on how this comes out you will all be prompted to give it a shot. The price is reasonable and the turn around time is as well. A note, I did not HAVE to buy another set of stock trim to do this, IGT offers a core service where you temporarily pay for them to source a set of stock trim for you, do the work while you still have your own interior intact, and then upon completion, you would pay for the carbon fiber service and in turn send out your stock peices as a replacement for the money you put up initially for them source another core for you. It really is the best way to do it. I just happened to find a good deal here on the classifieds. I am hoping it comes out similar if not identical to Sandoval's president's edition trim he is trying to sell in the classifieds right now. I would have considered purchasing his but some of his pieces are slightly different from mine being as it is an 08, and in my opinion, his asking price was a bit to high for trim. But again, it is very very rare and of course stock which to me adds value in itself. However, for those of us who aren't looking to shell out 3-5k for something like this, this is defiantly the way to go. Paul is here somewhere on the forums contact him if you are interested in getting your own interior done before I finish my own. I believe his username is Paul@IGT. Thanks for the support stay tuned!

I am hoping to see them in another week or so at best bro. Thanks for letting me see yours bro I just had to have it after I saw how yours came out. It really is a great upgrade. When are you leaving for Iraq? BTW, can you tell me again what size wheels and tires you are running? It was 9.5 in the front 10.5 in the rear?? I'm still debating as to what size to put on the car for the final wheel purchase. Thanks again for your help bro.

actually that won't be the case. What is being done is that the birdseye maple veneer was measured for height and removed from the sliding cover as to set the height standard for the carbon to be laid in place of the birdseye. Before I sent in the trim I put some tape on the top of the sliding cover to see if it would catch, and just one piece of tape caused a problem. So to combat this, they are completely removing the original veneer and making sure the carbon fiber is no higher/thicker than the original piece was.

So now we are really looking good as we get to the final stages. You will notice the last picture has the metal trim reapplied! Lookin' pretty "PRESIDENTIAL" to me no??? haha. Sorry, I'm sorry I get excited about this ****. Anyway I wanted to clarify that while I was initially going to go with Paul@IGT, towards the time I was to recieve my trim I lost touch with him and was w/o his business number which is not posted on their website. I PM'd him here as I believe he is a sponsor but he just didn't get back to me in time. His work is quality, which we've seen before on the CLS he did, but there were a few things that held me back from going with Paul and they were mainly price oriented, but also I was told that I would loose the metal trim at the top of the peices which I wasn't sure I wanted to do.

This job is being done by a company called Carbon Copy Designs. The website is carboncopydesigns.com it is run by a guy named Winston who is great at keeping an open dialouge while your work is being done. He is easy to get a hold of and gets back to you quickly. What I like about Winston is that when he is not available to speak to he will text and is genuinely concerned with his customers and customer service. That always goes a long way for me. His prices were more than reasonable and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Here are some updated shots, we should be reaching the final stages shortly so stay tuned. And, Yes, the shots of the sliding cover will be in soon!
