e500 tranny -- weird feeling
Hello, i just got an 05 e500 sport thats still under warrenty for another 2k miles.(still a newbie) . my question is when i am coasting slowly to a stop sign but dont completely stop and then press the gas normally to continue onward the car feels like it buckles a little or has think about shifting into 1st gear, its very slight and i am being picky but i was thinking it would be a perfectly smooth transition.. is this normal for these cars ? all the other gears are smooth and shifting normally as i would expect... i will take it to the dealer but not sure how to explain it to them,,,
thanks in advance

I have the exact same problem with my 04 E500 that you are having.
It never happened before and all of a sudden last week it started doing it.
Im taking it to the dealer on wednesday.
Anyone know what the problem may be?

i used to have the same problem as you guys, probably when you bring to dealer ask them to change the transmission mount and flush the transmission fluid. that way i hope it could save your problem. Anyway good luck.

There are various software updates and on some cars a change in valve for these transmissions. What you describe is the fact that the tranny is late making that final downshift into 1st. When you press on the gas it either bumps into 1st or 2nd after hesitating a split second. Sometimes as it downshifts into 1st it bumps down into 1st & the car feels as if someone's car behind you tapped your rear bumper.
These complaints are well documented on many 04-05 7 speed trannys. They've come a long way towards curing the condition. (2 < 1 > 2 Shift) IMHO this 7 speed is still not perfect in the 1 > 2 < 1 area... even in my '07... very close, but not perfect.

I had the same problem on my 2004 E500 w/ 60k mi. I brought it to the dealer last week. They changed the valve in the tranny, changed the tranny fluide & filter. Problem is fixed. It nows shifts like a new car; I couldn't feel the abrupt shifting anymore.

I have just noticed the exact same thing in my car (42K) 05-E500
guess I will add it to the list along with my SRS light on.
these little problems are becoming tiresome....

well, i have the same problem and i think its perfectly normal.
i had the same thing on my audi a6 and audi a4 and also my 04 e500 4matic.
gear 2 to 1 and gear 2-3-1, its like car is thinking weather it should down shift to first or to upshift to 3rd, little hesitation and stuff.
but i will still try to change the valve and tranny fluid and filter and see if the problem disapears like SZMB's.

I've been having the same problem, when the car downshifts from 2nd to 1st while trying to stop, it is rough compared to the others. I'm gonna take it into to dealer soon and see what they say as my warranty expires on the 30th. Also, they just changed my tranny under warranty back in january due to glycol contamination. Take it in to the dealer asap, just my 2 cents.

Nassau Cty. Not far from you. You should come by our MB meets, and every Thursday many convene in the Best Buy parking lot at Westbury. Good folks, great cars. I make it there occassionally. And for the MB meets, ck the "Events" section.
Gaazmon, good luck. I know u just had your tranny "repaired". I'm very disturbed reading about this issue.
To the original poster, did you resolve the issue??

nothing resolved -- deal with it attitude
nope ,, took it to the dealer and they basically said they knew of the "condition" and that is pretty normal.. i can force it by downshifting but to me its a design issue.. on the flip side i dont know if i want anybody ripping my tranny apart to try to fix something that may bot be able to be fixed,, dust, dirt, torque settings -- to much risk of them f''ing it uo worse.. i would like to find out how to change the so-called lifetime fluid in these,, at least thats my next move... anyone else have theirs fixed successfully ?

I guess i was pretty lucky w/ my dealer, the service rep really listened to my complains and agreed w/ me. I told them that the 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st gear shifting was not smooth, and sometimes very abrupt. That's all I said, and the problem was fixed. You should tell your rep that's not acceptable for a car that costs $60-70k when new. You need to tell them that a Honda shifts smoother than this, and costs 1/3. Ask them if changing the valve and fluid would improve this behavior. If so, they need to do that since it's not shifting smoothly. If the service rep does not want to do anything, ask to speak to the service manager, and tell them you're not satified w/ this car, and this problem takes the joy out of owning and driving a $70k performance car. You should make another appointment and get it fixed.

Ever since I bought this 2004 E500 CPO, this mild abrupt shifting behavior was always there, and I thought that was normal to the E class, and no where close to the smoothness of my BMW 530i. Since then, I'd visited the dealer 3 times for different issues, and gotten to drive 3 different new rentals: 2007 C280, 2008 C300, 2007 E350. Oh boy, what a difference. All these 3 new cars shift perfectly and smoothly, and pretty close to the smoothness of a BMW. So I knew there's some problem w/ my E500. Need less to say, i was lucky to get the problem fixed before the warranty expired. Now my car shifts like new, and I just can't wait to drive it every morning.
To many people this kind of mild abrupt shifting is acceptable, to me it's not. I've been driving performance cars for the past decade, i'm very sensitive to any imperfection. A performance car should drive like a performance car should, and a $70k car should perform like the price tag suggests. Otherwise, i may as well get a high-power pickup truck.
Doesn't the servie rep always remind us to fill out those service survey cards? Anything less than "excellent" is a failure for them, they say. If you're not satisfied w/ the service, tell them they're getting a failure grade. Ask them to show you a new car that has this kind of problem.

i have similar issues with my 06 4matic which has the 5 speed tranny. Does this issue or the DTB pertain to 4matics? I have 48k miles and I was going to have my tranny fluid flushed at 50k.

I'm a fairly new owner of an 07 E350 sport and I have noticed this rather jerky downshfit from 2nd to 1st as well. Has this issue been reported on the '07 E50 sport as well?
