It is relatively easy job, and I would not pay more then $300 for it (300 - just because I am lazy). But also, it could be done without the lift, but MUCH easier with one.

P.S. - check those mounts on parts . com - $325 sounds way too much.

It's probably happening above 40 but you can't hear it.

Bushings in the swing arms
Loose strut
Defective strut

noise front end

Yesterday I installed 2 motor mounts and 1 transmission mount Iam very happy to inform that the clicking/ rattling noise at slow speeds from front end is gone. Dont get ripped off from the mb dealer to get this job done it took less than 2 hours to do . I got quoted 14 hrs. labour. Hope you get your problem sorted out. PS I also replaced the ball joints first. Regards Mike

Well then... welcome to the club! What you described earlier is exactly what I am getting for a year now - "sound like as if u got a few stones in a plastic bucket". Accept I don’t get it on speed bumps…
Replaced a lot of stuff by now (not for fun, but because those needed to be replaced).
Going for Link ball joints and bushings now.
Motor mounts after that. And if all this does not help – for a new E class!

For some strange reason this noise has disappeared after tire change and alignment. But 1000 miles later it came back even stronger. After last check, I am going to replace those parts that I had specified in my previous post with picture, and will see what happens.

Remove plastic covers from under engine. Use a floor jack with a block of wood place under oil pan, Remove bolts from both engine mounts, remove air filter housing. Jack up engine carefully just enough so mounts are loose then slide out the mounts slide in new mounts then tighten everything back up then you are done.

Black smoke is usually fuel rich.

Do you have any computer codes.

O2 sensors failing putting the system in open loop
MAF failure
Injector sticking
Fuel regulator

Just to list a few. To answer for sure you will need more data.

Fuel mileage dropping is a good indicator of fuel rich

If your fuel mileage is where it should be then don't look in the rear.

One sure way fuel rich will show up is in increase fuel usage. This is normally black smoke. The engine does go rich under full acceleration to give it the power. So it is possible what you see is normal.

Excessive fuel can also fowl plugs and dilute oil, but my guess is you have none of this and it "might" be normal for you engine.

Yes My engine was idling rough and I took it in. They found the mounts leaking and failing. They replace both engine mounts AND the transmission. All is back to normal now.
