try so synchronize all your windows and sunroof or your remote door handle sensor might be dead. The dealer replaced mine a few years back.

I had that problem in my '04... sometimes the windows would even stop half way. Sometimes it worked fine inside the service department. They had to replace the IR sensor door handle, and then it worked fine inside or out.

Mine will not work from the front, only from the side as long as the key is pointing to the door handle. This is a pain, I always back in my car onto my parking spot at my office and if it starts raining and my roof is tilted up I still have to run outside and get wet in order to close it. There should be a sensor on the front, but I guess there is not one....

Do all cars have this capability? How do you do this?

It is a small IR sensor in door handles, you need to point your FOB IR directly to door handle and hold open/close button to operate windows.

Drrivers door only after '03. Point key towards the little red window on the door handle, press & hold Unlock Button to roll down windows/sunroof.

The car unlocks via radio waves, the window comand is sent via Infra red light (like a TV Remote).

Can I use this to close the windows as well? Maybe hold down the lock button?

Yes. You can open and close the windows/sunroof with the remote. Too bad you have to point it to the door handle just to make it work. On the Audi you can do the same function as far as your arm/disarm the door. Why does it have to be IR?

This feature actually exists on older cars too, at least the W210 had it.

MB feels it being a safety issue that you can only operate windows when close to the car, you cannot "accidentally" close windows then. One may not consider this reasonable but MB often selects a safer option even if it brings a drawback in some other aspect.

And of course the user manual explains how to use it for those who want to know.

Wrong, it work with w208, w210, W163 too, cuz i owned those cars before.
It's a standard feature, both of my CLK500 and E500 work with 8ft range. Especially watching my CLk folding down the top with the remote, it's cool

What about the quote wrong? It uses IR to operate the windows on the 211and there is no door handle IR window on the 211 after the 2003 model year. Stand by the passenger door & try it. The windows will not move but the doors will unlock on 211's after 2003.

Edward,

you could use a DAS and get the feature enabled that your sun roof closes automatically as soon as the rain sensor senses rain.

Try replacing the remote battery, I noticed on mine when the battery is old it is harder to open or close the windows. I also had this feature on my old w202.

These sensors are prone to go bad in the driver side door. Also, if the handle was waxed, it can damage the lens on the sensor. If new batteries do not work and the I/R window is clean and not damaged, you probably need a new I/R sensor.

It should work from 10 feet away, pointing at the driver door handle with the SmartKey.

Previous generation cars (W210, etc) had I/R sensors on the passenger side as well.

This will not accomplish what he is trying to do. The rain-close feature will only vent the roof (if it were open) - not close it. He stated it was already vented and he wanted to close it.

So the sun roof will not completely close but rather tilt upward? That doesn't make sense but I believe you of course.

Correct. If the roof is open, it will close the roof, and place it in the vented position if it detects rain. The same thing with excessive interior heat it is detected - it will vent the roof. I don't see a need for that and would worry if my car sat outside on a hot day, the sunroof would automatically vent and if it came a rainstorm it would get the inside of the car wet, so I leave it disabled.

I am not sure why they don't have it close, instead of vent, with the rain-close feature.

Question is, would MB respond to that if enough people would make a proactive attempt in writing them with the suggestion of closing the sun roof completely instead of putting it on vent? I mean this should be possible through an update via SDS I assume, right?

Possibly with a flash of the OCP. But I doubt they would change the software for the optimistic 40-50 people that would write them, especially considering it is supposed to be disabled in the USA

That I don't understand. Why in the world do they implement such features but disable them by default? I know cars that are shipped to Dubai for instance have other features enabled/disabled than the US ones or the European ones.

Did not know this, it would be such a cool thing to have IF it worked correctly, still cannot understand why it would vent and not just close with rain.

See that's what I'm saying. Hm, I think I will talk to Steve once he is in HB next time to enable this feature. I kinda like it. I mean isn't it better to have it tilted rather than all the way open in the RARE case that it will rain down here in San Diego?

if you have the keyless one then press the door button to open them. If not change battery.
