ESP Light on today, What exactly is ESP?

ESP Light on today, What exactly is ESP?
Today while I was waiting for a parking, I backed up my car to yield another car, and the light came on. I thought this light was about your Electronic Stability Program which controls your skit control and ABS system? but searching in this forum, it seems to also control many other things? But this light only came on once, and I can't seems to duplicate the problem again, I doubt stealer can find out any problems. What do you guys think the problem might be and has anyone have this light came on from time to time?
My airmatic shock system light came on about a month ago twice, and stealer wasn't able to duplicate the problem and told me everything was fine, I am just affraid this will be the case like I mentioned above, and I really hate stealer can not see the problem and tells me that my car is ok..

ESP light will come on any time one wheel turns faster than the others. This means a slip or skid to the system. This is normal and then the light goes off and there is no problem.

What Kent says. You might have hit a bit of grease or water on the pavement for a second or two.
fwiw, it comes on all the time for me if I get too heavy on the go pedal from a stop

Sorry, I meant to say if the light stay on like the picture I have attached to my first post and a message telling me it's inoperative and it doesn't go away until you shut off the engine, what might be the problem?

If it stays on then there's a malfunction (unless you have turned the ESP off manually)
Just see if it happens again. If it does, try switching it on and off manually. If it stays on then take it in to the dealer. Have them see if it has any codes stored.

This light comes on momentarily when vehicle detects a wheel spin or skid (any one wheel or a combination). you can make it come again by taking a very sharp turn at 35/40mph (outside wheel will skid). This is perfectly normal. Also in rain or on slick road if you floor it, the light will blink while rear wheels stabilize. next to the lock/unlock button on dash is the esp button which you can use to turn this feature off (light stays on in the cluster).

Thanks guys, I am going to take it to the stealer tomorrow for check up, my case wasn't during the startup, I do have the keyless go, but I have drove about 20 miles to my destination and I was backup my cara to yeild another car, then out of no where the light came on and it stayed on until I stop the engine and when I restart the car, everything came back normal. One thing is, just recently whenever I backup my car, I can some times hear a weird noise during breaking, I always had the break noise, but it happends even when backup, not sure if this is related to anything, because after all the light turn on during backup.. 
Will talk to the service advisor and see what they say.
