Guys top up your oil level!!!
so I topped it up (was half way between min and max) & now I see 20 mpg city yeeeeeeeeeehu ... I've never seen 20 in the city before, was around 17~18 max
FYI, according to the manual, its 2.1 qrts between Max and Min, so if u're at min there's still 6.x qrts, in other words it'd take 2.x qrts to reach max from min
Also I got Chevron Techrons fuel inj cleaners from costco, a pack of 6 for 15 bucks!! I'll use one every 1200 miles

With the car cold, call up same secret menu that allows you to put it in dyno mode and check oil level. You can see exact oil levels down to a 1/10th of a quart. Much better than using the standard MFD method where it says "Oil Level OK"
Just did this 10 minutes ago in my SL600 and was running 8.9 qts, which is .10 below the 9qts it should be running. I can live with that. There's probably some oil hanging around in the filter.

well .. if you run no oil .. you'll get crappy mileage ... so I wouldn't say there is no correlation.

I think it makes more difference in a 4matic since your piston's power stroke is striving hard to spin FOUR wheels (v6 would delivery 1 pwr stroke every 60 degrees out of 360 - and you want that to last till next one comes in..) Anything n everything that can make that power-stroke well 'lubricated' would actually delivery power more effectively (make it last longer dont u think so ??) - ultimately lifting ur foot off a bit on the pedal ... think small..
just got transmission oil change done for $300 ... now the stealer's saying to do transfer case oil change would be another $400
CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!

You'll have 6.4 Qrts vs 8.5 when at Min - you're saying this wont make a difference in engine lubrication ??

Also, 8.5 quart capacity allows for cooler engine oil which is what MB had in mind I think.
Benz-o-rama.....Would you kindly direct me to find instructions to check engine oil level on the computer for a 2006 E350. I have the dipstick, but I would like to get the very accurate reading this can give. Thanks!

I recently had my tranny oil changed on my G35 by a shop. I check the flluid level found it to be a quart too much. Instead of driving to the shop and had it drained, I used my Top Sider and syphon the fluid out, only took me 15 minutes from start to finish. I don't know the correlation between oil level and MPG since I have never read any article on this subject. My 0.02.

Alright,
So in this thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...ld-i-know.html, post #2, there is a video showing you how to get into a secret subset of menus. One of which allows you to put your car in dyno mode. Instead of choosing dyno mode, hit the left/up button again and you'll see an oil level screen. While on that screen, turn the key to position #2 and it will perform an oil level check. You will see results in X.X format.

My bad.
I just got back in from trying it. I got to the service data screen and the oil level read --:-
The car was still warm, but it was not level, so I will try it on level ground.

Yep, that's the screen. When you're there, just click the key to position 2 and it will check your oil level regardless of engine temp or incline. It does take a few seconds to display the results.

I should also state the even though it will give you a reading while hot or on an incline, it will not be accurate. Obviously, for most accurate reading, check with car cold on level ground.

You can not defend the argument that adding oil gives better gas milage. It simply doesn't.

I had my transmission fluid changed along with the transfer case at about 28,000 miles and it was about $270. I just had the rear differential serviced and it was only about $60.00. I also had the coolant flushed (I gave them distilled water to use) and had supercool added. I did this just now at bout 52K miles because the PH of the antifreeze had just gone over 8.
Fluid changing on the above mentioned parts is only wise. I don’t plan to change the ATF and transfer case fluid until it hits 100K. As for the oil, My car says that it takes 8.5 Quarts and since my car does not have a dipstick I use the service menu of the car. It has never been bellow 8.1 quarts when the engine is off and 5.2 quarts when the engine is running. I have never had to add a drop yet.
Just my 2 cents,
Steve

Excellent Advises - Thanks Steve!!
Couple of questions:
- How do we check the PH of the antifreeze ?
- Which Mercedes Dealership did you go to, I can maybe give reference
- My car has a dipstick, would I still be able to see Oil level in the odo sys display ?

The large oil capacity is chosen so that the oil runs cooler and since there is more of it, it takes longer for it to get dirty enough to warrant an oil change... Thus the once a year oil change interval. Its not enough to have an oil who's lubrication properties last the year, it has to not be fully laden with particulate matter from doing its job. Those are the reasons for the large amount of oil. The min reading is the minimum amount of oil that will properly cool clean and lubricate the engine. More oil doesn't get more slippery, or the answer to car manufacturers CAFE mileage problems would simply be to add more oil to gas guzzlers crankcases.
You can not defend the argument that adding oil gives better gas milage. It simply doesn't.
