E320 Panoramic Sunroof Repairs
#26
Does anyone have the instructions of how to take the roof apart and what to service. I use rusty's for parts, he is great better then dealer by 20-40%!
I went to the Dealer in Erie PA. Had a couple of issues, one was the roof. 4700 plus 20 hours of labor and something about taking the window out was extra in case it broke... By the way stay away from this dealer took a full week to replay my water pump!, and no owner loaners!
Please send any instructions to maci@usa.com.
Thank you very much for any and all help.
Ps.
Seems like Mercedes should recall the motor, expensive option to work what 200 +/- times I opened the roof...

I have similar problem on my '98 E320 (sorry about posting here, but hopefully mechanism is similar). The sunroof will go up and down at the rear, but it will not open. It did once move about an inch with some creaking noises, but now doesn't move at all.
It wouldn't bother me to leave it like that, but I have some slight rust forming at the lip and I am sure sealing strip will have to come out to repair the rust.
Looking for a method of opening the roof manually - The manual method won't work. The socket the crank goes into does turn when teh switch is activated, indicating the motor is probably OK.
MB videos all show roof already open

I have the same problem 03 e500. Cable sticking straight up, roof wide open. Where did you get yours fixed? I'm in Northern California

Please send me your WIS showing what to check for and how to lubricaate the sunroof. Mine won't close. I have a 2009 E350.
I tried the fuse solution...no luck. Also tried the manual crank but it is so tight that nothing moves.
Thank you

What ever happened
Has anyone successfully had their E320 panoramic sunroof repaired?...local dealer informs me the entire unit needs to be replaced for $6,500. I am told there are NO servicable parts for the panoramic sunroof. It is stuck partially open...motor works but clicks like something is stuck in the tracks.
What was your solution?

Some of the comments in this thread is just pure BS. Putting your problem aside for the moment, parts are available, you don't replace the complete panoramic roof---that's the BS part.
Based upon your description, the issues could be the motor or roof drive cable set----if the motor drive thats simpler however if the issue is with the cable drive, the replacement is very labor intensive.
My estimate that it will take about one and Half hours just to make the determination!!
If you live in a metro area there will surely be a sunroof repair facility. That is where I would go first. Failing that your knowledgeable options are very limited and not a DIY!!

Thanks
That's fair.
I do own a 211 Merc that's just sitting in my garage with the pano roof fully open.
Its not a daily driver so I'm in no hurry. I'm also quite handy and have a fully tooled garage. My issue is that this car is different than every other car I own and don't want to screw it up. I'm also 200 miles away from the nearest big city or dealer so I'm looking at doing it myself "IF" I can.
I'm annoyed that for a car that sometimes goes weeks without being driven has this problem.
Anyways, I appreciate your help and that of a fellow that has emailing me.
I'd buy you both a beer if you were near.
Thanks again.

Under those circumstances, I would strongly advise spending the 20 bucks for a 24hr subscription to MB WIS(workshop information system) put you VIN in and search for panoramic sun roof---there are reams of detailed removal/install information to help you and speed up the repair of your sunroof!!Enjoy the winter!!

Do a Pano roof repair search on the AMG forum, fixed mine no problem, it does help if you have small hands, pull the motor on the drivers side in front of the roof, do the plate support for the motor and replace the motor. The issue is the motor is made from cheap scrap pot aluminum and deforms with use the steel electrical plate is used to add support to the mating surface of the motor and stops it from deforming and thus the gear will not contact the track for the roof. Count on spending about 2 hours on the fix if you get the needed parts before hand, but even if you pay yourself 100 per hour at least you will have a smile on your face afterwards on all the other money you saved.

Thank you Critter!
I don't have small hands but I got time and patience, hehe

Try this to get into the motor
https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...-fixes-24.html
Here is a good forum for the fix using a backing plate, works well

I discovered a great MB repair shop in Canoga Park called MBZ Motors: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mbz-motors-canoga-park.
George is straight-forward and honest.
The motor in my panoramic moon roof failed and they charged $800 to fix.
The larger problem was my front right air strut failed. I had this happen to the other side and it was astronomically expensive (part alone $1750 + 2 hours labor). MBZ had a refurbished part in stock and replaced it for $900. The cheapest elsewhere I found was $1150 for refurbished. Similar situation previously with my headlight control unit. They used refurbished and saved me much $$$.

2009 e350 Panao Roof
In reading some of these post I just can't tell if it is just the front sunroof that opens / slide or tilts or if that hugh back panel is supposed to open as well? I have only hasd the car for about 2 months and have used the normal sunroof and have opened the interior slide cover to see open air above from all seats but have never thought of opening the back panel? If it does open please let me know how / where the switch might be located.
Thanks in advance!!

Amg pano roof thread no longer available
critter, would you happen to know anywhere else in the forum that might be able to show a how-to in replacing the pano motor?
