Got E63 Brakes :)

Hi all,
Big thanks to Daminchi for the perfect set of E63 brakes and Konigstiger for the technical assistance. Sweet geezus these things grab hard!

If anyone's interested, the brakes are straight bolt-on with the exception of needing E55/63 front spindles. Front sprindles run approximately $550-600 USD for the pair.

A few other notes:
- My old brakes had brake sensors on all four sides, the E63's have two, one front and one rear
- The brake dust shields have to be modified. I used the shield from the E63 for the fronts and i cut my stock rears.
- The lower ball joint on my passenger front was toast so that assembly was replaced at the same time

On to the pictures!

They're super great binders but get ready for major dust and squeal. Unfortunately there's no aftermarket dustless pads available yet for the E63.

Also big cost for pad/rotor replacement, but you already know that.

All that's left for your car now is to drop the 6.2 motor in there

Edit: just curious, did you pull the whole SBC ecu out of the car? Just wondering about codes etc., if you had SBC and then put in non-SBC brakes.....

Well, I'll be honest that I didn't realize the later model W211's are non-SBC! I figured that the 55 and 63 brakes were compatiable and I went for it. They work incredibly well and I'm very relieved it worked. SBC is hooked up like the factory intended.

I brought my car to MB to bleed the brakes and check codes. Besides some battery-related low-voltage codes everything was perfect.

I must be only one of a few that prefer the front end without a lip One of my fav wheels of all time are the Kleemann TS-6's but they're $$.

I was looking into painting but the whole project was expensive enough. I was going to do Brembo yellow... we'll see what happens down the road

Question:

How much does it cost to get calipers painted? Now that I've purchased some mack daddy wheels for my SL600, I think I wanna do mine but I have no idea how much that costs.

Hmmm. Interesting. So you have SBC still? Did you upgrade to the later version (I think 2004-5) or keep what you had?

What model year E63 did the brakes come from?

I guess Konigstiger would have mentioned something about it working or not. I don't know SBC very well, but I'm guessing now that the SBC ecu will hook up to any conventional system (?) I know that changing pads on SBC systems requires disabling the computer, although some people say you can just shut the doors, lock the car, let it sit for 10 minutes first and then the calipers stay put (the car thinks it's just sitting there and won't brake)

Anyway, they are super brakes. Get ready to wash your wheels every day. Brake dust is pretty intense. I wish Porterfield or another vendor would come out with E63 dustless pads.

Yes, I kept my original SBC system and it seems to be working perfectly so far. The brakes came from a 2007 E63 which approximately 15k miles. On a side note the front rotors were surprisingly worn considering the mileage...

Which makes me wonder if A) the PO drove like a bat out of hell B) the rotors wear faster than other makes/models or a combination of both.

My mechanic said there's about 60-70% life left in them... thank god I don't drive much as replacement cost for the rotors alone are pretty ridiculous.

I should clarify that Konigstiger helped with part numbers and not the actual brake conversion. Your correct on the brake change procedure with the SBC systems. The only note to add is to roll down your windows!
