why?

525, 530, 535 === e320, e350

545 - e500

When comparing resale values of cars I own vs. cars I don't own, I always seem to find that the cars I don't own are worth more than the ones I own.

I've been looking and I have found that in Canada an equivalent 5 series costs much less than an E-Class.

Perceived reliability vs unreliability. w211 E-class have a bad reputation generally while the 5 series you don't hear as much about

i'm sure if you look up the 2002, 2003 7 series, they are pretty low since they had tons of problems.

also, the new 5 hasn't come out yet.

That's exactly it, although the reality is there's no more unreliable car than a BMW.

I'm hoping when the new 5 series comes out the price of the e60 M5's will drop...

They will for sure. Especially since the new F10 M5 with have DCT instead of the horrible and problem-ridden SMG. SMG will be gone forever.

I wouldn't say the w211 is anymore unreliable than the 5 series. My mom has a 2004 530i and there are tons of problems with it.

You have to compare apples to apples...ie...same level BMW 550i Vs. E550...options...mileage...condition...etc,etc.

I just bought a 2007 E550 and I was deciding over the 2007/08 BMW 550i or the 2007/08 E550 and they are similarly priced.

I just sold my Wife's 2001 Olds Intrigue (55,000 Miles) to the Neighbor for $ 4,000. Orig Sticker price 1/2001 28K... I don't think we did poorly.

I dont know if I would call you friend if I were your neighbor
here is autotraders listing , of course you have some dealer who found the last gold brick and then all the cars in between. I will split the difference 3000 for a 28000 dollar car is almost a give away. I am looking at a 6 year old MB and its still has 30% of its value in a down market. I dont think I will get to 10% in 3 more years ,we will see.

Average Price:

$4,999

Correct.

Reliability and data on MB reliability listed in public sources drive the prices down. MB is on the verge of losing their edge on reliability.

I think you have it backwards for those years. MB had the most unreliable cars from 2003-2007 when compared to BMW.
http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...ses-top-j.html
2007 was supposed to be the year MB improved the quality of the vehicles so if you look back to 2003-2006 it would have just been worse. At one point I think they were the worst in a JD power survey.
Even in the latest 2009 JD power survey of 2006 cars MB is still behind BMW. Suprisingly Audi came ahead of both BMW and MB. People always say AUDi has so many problems well they finished first among the german manufacturers.

[QUOTE=rieger;3936167]......... MB had the most unreliable cars from 2003-2007 ...../QUOTE]

Correct. My data source has confirmed this. I have a 2003 and I will tell you based on my observation data base of ONE,, the 2003 had very high failure rate and repair expense. Knowing this in advance I would have bought the 2003 Jag X type V8 which data indicates it has much better reliability than my car.

However the 2007 MB's E and newer are showing significantly improved reliability and are at the top of the list for recommended to buy in my buying service for reliability. I had planed to buy a 2011 but economic reasons in my retirement account have put the brakes on buying a new car of any brand.

IMO, it's the 03 was the worse with 04 being next (for E). 05 was a good amount better and 06 even better than that.

Off topic, I dont know if the standard 5s have ARS (Active Roll Stabilizer something) - you're gonna LOVE that! The car literally cuts thru corners like a knife ... ARS senses curving motion and stiffens/ dampens opposite shocks so u'll have literally 0 body roll - I know the 6 & 7s have that standard

+1, 5 series don't have this standard

also the 5 series don't have active steering standard (speed sensitive steering). E class does. lol, i remember BMW having commercials for that feature. and i thought, wait, my car already comes with that standard, lol.

wow you can even get an m sport package on the 528 now. sweet.
