You have to compare apples to apples...ie...same level BMW 550i Vs. E550...options...mileage...condition...etc,etc.
I just bought a 2007 E550 and I was deciding over the 2007/08 BMW 550i or the 2007/08 E550 and they are similarly priced.
I dont know if I would call you friend if I were your neighbor
here is autotraders listing , of course you have some dealer who found the last gold brick and then all the cars in between. I will split the difference 3000 for a 28000 dollar car is almost a give away. I am looking at a 6 year old MB and its still has 30% of its value in a down market. I dont think I will get to 10% in 3 more years ,we will see.

Reliability and data on MB reliability listed in public sources drive the prices down. MB is on the verge of losing their edge on reliability.

2007 was supposed to be the year MB improved the quality of the vehicles so if you look back to 2003-2006 it would have just been worse. At one point I think they were the worst in a JD power survey.
Even in the latest 2009 JD power survey of 2006 cars MB is still behind BMW. Suprisingly Audi came ahead of both BMW and MB. People always say AUDi has so many problems well they finished first among the german manufacturers.

Correct. My data source has confirmed this. I have a 2003 and I will tell you based on my observation data base of ONE,, the 2003 had very high failure rate and repair expense. Knowing this in advance I would have bought the 2003 Jag X type V8 which data indicates it has much better reliability than my car.
However the 2007 MB's E and newer are showing significantly improved reliability and are at the top of the list for recommended to buy in my buying service for reliability. I had planed to buy a 2011 but economic
reasons in my retirement account have put the brakes on buying a new car of any brand.

also the 5 series don't have active steering standard (speed sensitive steering). E class does. lol, i remember BMW having commercials for that feature. and i thought, wait, my car already comes with that standard, lol.
