The E crushes the 5 series inside and out IMHO! I made the right choice

It's hard to judge a car solely on photo's until you see one in the metal.

The first thing I noticed was that the front bumper looks too bulky - "like a chipmonk with a mouthful of nuts in it's checks".
The rest of the exterior is no surprise, slab sided with a modified 7 series rear end and elongated front headlights.

The interior is anything but elegant. I really dislike this new dashboard design that BMW have adopted.Way too flat and angular and I think will turn out to look very dated in a few years. It looks more Americian in it's layout than European.

It will probably sell well and the M version will probably give the E55 AMG a good run for it's money but I'm very happy with my choice for overall style and appeal.

wow....up until those pics ive really liked how the 5-Series was coming along. However, it looks so ugly in those pics. The photoshopped pics that have been around for a while showed a car that was more seamless...the car in these pics is more blocky (if thats a word). Kind of looks like a 7-series/Grand Am mix.

It looks like a mini 7, which BMW is redesigning again after it's current design has contributed towards very slow sales. Go figure!

BMW should drop the "Ultimate" and just change it to "Ugly Driving Machine"....

What the heck are they thinking?

It probably drives like a dream and the interior is decent (not nearly as good as the E) but man is it UGLY!!!

Those wrap around head and taillights are gross. Taillights look like they came from a WRX.

Whaaat the heck.?!? I'm glad I switched.

wesam was correct - the frontend looks like a Pontiac Grand Prix near the hood / grill area! The middle to rear looks like a Passat (at least from the picture). The interior is well...I'm not quite sure what to say.

Here's what I see...

Front end looks like a combo between a smushed Z3 and the new Lexus ES300.

Side profile reminds me of the Jaguar S-type.

The rear looks like part Toyota Avalon and part mini-7.

I'm actually quite surprised by the interior. It's more tasteful than I thought, but pales in comparison to the W211.

Chris Bangle is boldly taking BMW in a new direction... and guess what? Consumers are spending their hard-earned bucks elsewhere! Redesign the 7-series already? Hmmm... poor BMW.

Looks aside, though, I bet the 5 will be one mean drive!

I sure am glad I didn't wait...

Good God, that is ugly. BMWs are a hoot to drive, no question about that, but man, I would be embarassed to be seen in that gawkish freak machine.

I looked at a 745 at one point. Lots of cool stuff, but I couldn't get over how tremendously unappealing the car looked. A guy I know has one, he said its fun to drive, but he has had a hell of a lot of problems (well more than the E problems)

No question that MB wins the design contest.

It doesn’t make any sense that they would release a car like this...its way too much like the current 7, and like what was mentioned above...that’s getting a pretty substantial face lift (the quickest BMW has ever done this in its entire history, BTW).

I'm staring to think that those pics aren’t the real deal. They are in the format of what BMW initially releases to show off their new cars. However, the lighting on the car and that burliness of the pics makes me think these pics are fake. But then again, that interior pic would be really, really hard to fake.

I think there are too many things in the center. A manual, hand brake and the knob. Too many htings. What would the guy do if he was looking at the screen moving the knob and he wasnt looking at the road and looked to late he wouldn't have time to switch gears. At least with buttons you look for one sec to find it.

Thank goodness for the new "E". I DEFINATELY made the right choice with the E500!

If I had to drive this thing on a daily basis, I would have to carry a barf bag with me while driving.

I thought they might be fake too till i realized they were scanned from a launch brochure. All the same take with a grain of salt.
But i will say that BMW is going in the wrong direction stylistically speaking that is. They are agile cars that get your blood pumping once youre in them but with looks like these why would you get into one?

BMW has to give up the crack pipe! It's astonishing how poor their judgement is with the dash and overall interior. BMW was always my dream car and I felt they put all competition to bed in the 80's and 90's. Either everyone caught on or BMW smokes crack at their design meetings. In either case, I love my 2003 E320- Blk/Char SPORT.

2003 SL Launch Edition, 2003 E500 Pewter/Stone
Too bad, BMW had a real opportunity to turn around the leverage. With the new CLE, the CLK, the SL, CL and S, MB really has design superiority over BMW. I think the only area of design equality for BMW over MB is the 3 series versus the C Class. They are both really fine. But the 7, 6 and 5 series have been trashed, in my opinion.

Yes, I'm a BMW 5 owner and looks like most of the people at bmw forum hate it, including myself. I hate the interior and the odd tail light. Maybe the new M5 will look better but i guess we have to wait and see

here a spy pic of the new M5
