Car got keyed :-(
Some SOB keyed my car last night. I hope they burn in hell. The a$$hole keyed across my driver side door and finished his masterpiece on the rear panel. Insurance will cover repairing it under my comprehensive policy (less my deductable of course) but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for making sure I select a competent body shop.

FT Benz,
I'm sorry to hear that. I get many dirty looks when I tell people to stay off my car or when they think they need to walk pass my car with 1 inch space in between them an my car at the supermarket's parking lot. Like there is not enough room to walk. I can't stand these ****'s who can't respect other people's property. This isn't a game to damage others cars.
Again, I'm really sorry to hear it and try to stay calm even if it hurts.

Sorry to hear that. My car also get keyed the day after I cleaned it and waxed it. It pretty much glowed under the sun. Like all beautiful things in life, beautiful cars sometimes get unwanted attentions. My friend has a Porsche and every time he purposely parks the car far away from everyone else to avoid getting door dents. Guess what, one day he walked out to the parking lot and found a couple of dings on the passenger door, but there the closest car was like a mile away. Basically, some idiot drove up to his car, made a couple of door dings and drove off.

since insurance is going to cover it, take it to a MB dealer that has a body shop. I had the damage to my car done by my dealer, looks like new.
MB uses that nanoparticle paint and I think its a special process, not sure if all body shops can do it.

The paint is oil based paint unlike US car maker's water based paint. In the factory they fully submerge the body so paint get everywhere (even in cracks between to panes of metal) and that's one of the reasons why MB's basically don't rust from inside out like other cars which only get the paint sprayed on.
Get it fixed, she is too valuable to leave her keyed.

Sorry to hear your car got keyed. My previous Benz got keyed one week after I got it ( 25 miles on odometer). My wife cried her eyes out.
You should take it to the dealer to have the work done. Don't take to independent shop. Insurance pays for it so make sure it done right the first time. After dealer finished the job, pick up the car during bright sun day. Park your car in the sun and inspect it carefully and make sure you look at the paint/body side way so you can see the fault (if any).
Don't pick up your car in the evening. The sun is your friend.

Thanks for all the condolences....I took it to the place my insurance company recommended and the estimate is $1700. They seemed very knowledgeable and capable. I'm going to take it to the place the dealership works with and see where their estimate comes in. I'm only responsible for the deductible so it's getting fixed, just don't know where yet.

So it is ok to damage other people's property? I would sue their last shirt away if I could just so they learn a harsh painful lesson. Same with the people who threw a brick out of a pickup truck into my windshield on the freeway at some 85-90 mph. If it wouldn't have been 2 pane glass the brick would have killed my passenger that's for sure.

50 years ago we would have put them in a camp where they would do physical labor at $.50/hrs until they paid their damages off. They would never even think about of damaging someone else property.

You're right. We should ask them nicely to never do it again and to please pay for the repairs. Have them over for dinner to talk about it and see what the car or its owner did to provoke the alleged keying...

Of course. Many countries used to have it. And once you have to work your *** off in a stone pit at $.50 you think twice if you ever wanna steal a pack of gum, key a car or something else again.
But unfort. many times the victims become the perp through the society, lawyers and the system and these methods don't work anymore. If he wouldn't have parked his car there he wouldn't have the damage. If she wouldn't have walked there in shorts she wouldn't have been raped. If if if... What a pity.

No. I knew I should not have posted that because no point in arguing about in on the internet. But its easy to say burn in hell on the internet but to really want him to burn in hell over that is ridiculous. But then again this is a pointless argunent over the internet.

Find the best high-end indy mechanic for MB or Porsche and ask them for a recommendation.

I'm not religious so "burn in hell" means a lot less to me than if he said he'd unload his weapon on them.

why do you need to pretend to be the "bigger" guy by saying you shouldnt have posted/argued on the internet? thats the whole purpose of this forum. We discuss ideas, thoughts, new stuff, diy etc. good bad funny sad.... this isnt china, we say whatever we want wherever we want.

As for repairs, most dealers ship the work out to a 3rd party body shop. Make sure they match the paint correctly with OEM product (ask for proof upfront so they know not to mess with you). MB has paint codes (make sure you see the receipts and empty paint containers). Also check the paint depth with a paint meter before you accept delivery of the repair. Never use the shop your insurer pre-qualifies, they are usually not on your side.
As for the keying, people are asshats. In a bad economy, more people become asshats and a Mercedes is a very visible symbol of success and envy.
I think keying someone's car is the ultimate in cowardice

Just got our E350 back from body shop a short while ago. Hit and run. Parked for less than 30 minutes in an end space with lots of available parking. Rear fender from tail lamp and right across the sheetmetal. We left the tail lamp as it's barely noticeable (scratch) but the dent and paint was about $1200 out of our pocket. Fortunate to have an authorized body shop in town. They did an awesome job but it still gets me fired up and like stealing $1200 out of my pocket I don't have (not to mention the diminished value). Sorry, guy. It truly sucks. I want to get cones to put around the car when I park. Better would be a bubble. Better yet would be a bubble that shocked people. Amazing these people can sleep at night.
