Steering Tilt Motor Problem - 2004 E500
My steering column does not adjust up and down now. You can hear the motor running but there is no movement of the column. Anyone else have this problem?

This happened to my 05 W211 when I had it. Not a big deal to repair. There is a small plastic or nylon gear that is stripped. Dealer installed a new one in about an hour while I waited. Mine was under warranty so I cannot give a cost estimate. I was told it happens if one pulls on the wheel while getting out and the wheel is still moving to the up position. FYI I have not changed my habits and it has never occurred again in any of my Benzes.

Seems like getting to it is the big deal. hopefully the CLK is similar enough to the E that there is a quick fix. I have not seen a fix posted yet. I have my whole dash apart and the column is still fully intact.

Apparently there are two bolts that go in thru the top (where the speedo assy is) that hold it down. I have the assy loose but cannot get it unplugged.
Does this plug directly in or off to the side like the cigarette lighter?
Edit Answer: Do not pull the connector there is a lock that moves back and forth on this connector just like the headlight switch.

Well after taking picking up the part, getting some food for my little one, and taking a small nap, I decided to work a little more on this.
Its out!

The trick is not to pull yourself out of the car untill the wheel has finished going up. The parts are made to lift the wheel, not a person exiting the car holding onto the wheel as it is going up.

What you are seeing here are a few failures of the gear/coupling, not motor failure. I do not recall seeing anything anywhere about motor failure. Unless you are one of those guys who are afraid to use anything on the car because it might break I would not be concerned about a motor failure. If you are one of the guys who will not use any feature lest it might break my suggestion is to put the car in a garage and take the bus, then nothing on the car will break.

You probably have to use "Some" degree of common sense about use of these motors. The convenience system does put a burden on some of the motors. As a matter of fact I am thinking about undoing my Backup Assist convenience where the passenger-side mirror gets tilted every time I put in reverse gear.
In a normal usage of any car's mirror adjustments how often you think s/o would adjust their side mirrors? May be at the rate of once per month (just to come up w/ an "average" number). Now think, every single time you park the car, when getting it out of the parking slot (whether garage, driveway, shopping, ...) you put in reverse. How many time per day is that, and calculate to the month.
Now that number vs. the average of 1 time per month, yeah definitely is excessive wear on the motor. Unless it is something (really) necessary otherwise I would not want to use something that excessively -- unless I pay up for the replacement and work and not then complain about it.

If you read my comment, this is what I said "Unless it is something (really) necessary otherwise I would not want to use something that excessively -- unless I pay up for the replacement and work and not then complain about it."
So it has to be "really necessary", and one should be willing to pay up for teh replacement parts and the related labor, as well as then not complaining about spending the money. In such a case, fine

Ok so is there a procedure someone has used on the column? Does it have to be removed from the car? If so who has done this? If it can be done in the car is it just lowered to reach?
Or are we just complaining about how difficult it is and if we should use tilt or not.
How about some help for doing the work?
