Easy air intake modification...pics

Did an easy mod to the intake system today. Can't guarantee anything, but it seems as if it makes the intake closer to a true "ram" intake system. I had noticed that the inlets to the intake system are perfectly situated behind the front grille. For some reason the stock system has two plastic/rubber pieces that basically cover what would otherwise be a direct route into the inatke system. So I got a razor knife and made two cuts on each side and removed the pieces. Who knows what improvement there may be, but the system is certainly much less restrictive now, and under speed it should approach a true ram air system. I put the Powerchip upgrade in this week as well, and they said any airflow improvements would improve their ECU performance. We'll see...

Interesting my clk 500 does not have any "plates" in front of the intake tubes (although the front ends of the 209/211 are quite a bit different) It would be nice to know wht MBZ put those things there in the first place....maybe it smooths out the air flow or keep the induction roar to a minimum at W.O.T. If you notice a problem they seem easy to replace back to stock

I can't see the photo that you posted but I asked a similar question about the grill plates that partially block the intake tract on the 99 models. I was told that they help prevent water ingestion to the engine. I'm not sure I buy it but I don't want to find out the hard way either.

Keep us posted.

Epower: Interesting. I'm looking to do some easy and inexpensive mods to increase HP. Let me know if you feel any noticeable difference with your "Maguivre" ram intake system and chip. Have you thought about installing a K&N air filter? BTW, what kind of chip did you get, where did you get it and, if you don't mind me asking, what was the price? TIA

I got the Powerchips ECU upgrade. They installed in about two hours at their office in Santa Monica (Wilshire and PCH). Was about $700. Car is running real good. Thought about the K&N, but have heard as many negatives as positives regarding using K&N in a stock airbox. Saying that, I probably will try them soon

EPOWER,

What do you think about the chip? Noticeable gains? What power gains does the chip claim? More responsive throttle?

Thanks

They quoted 15 HP with the chip alone. I don't have any objective measures, but based on feel and responsiveness alone, I am very happy. I had a BMW 540 with about $10,000 of Dinan mods, and this single $700 mod did what feels to be about the same. I had also put on a new exhaust system the week before, so maybe the total gain is about 18 to 20 HP with the chip and Exhaust.
