Rubbing sound when turning 06 E500 4matic
Just picked up an 06 E500 4matatic with 60k miles. Great ride, but just noticed that there is a rubbing feeling when making a full left or right turn. No vibration/rubbing feeling when driving straight away or making a slight left or right turn. Any help/ideas would be appreciated
Improper tire rotation????

Do you feel this "rubbing" noise when you are in reverse and turning as well? If so, take Socketman's advise and have the dealer change your transfer case fluid and hope for the best.

Checked PS fluid--it was good. Of course, when I went outside this morning to follow up on your suggestion of checking to see if it will do the same in reverse--nada. Can't reproduce it. Took it to the nearby K Mart and did enough circles to the left and to the right that I was starting to draw a crowd. lol
Will keep an eye on it. As usual--you guys are tops!!!! Many thanks

Good job paying attention to what your E500 was telling you and getting it taken care of rather than waiting until it developed into a blown transfer case. Enjoy!

Key as you can see the family has 3 MB's I am a backyard mechanic from the old days--points, plugs, condenser, dwell etc. I do as much work as I can on the Benz's, but the first place that I look to is this site.
You guys told me what the problem was before the dealer even saw it!!!!
I have to give the dealer credit---it was not a Benz dealer--no problem--we will order the fluid and bring it back. No charge--wish more people were like that.
Once again thanks for the into and help.

rubbing chattering
I'm having the same kind of rubbing / chattering noise. Took it to the dealer and the said they had to align something. Noise went away for a bit but its back now. Dealer said the transmissions and transfer case are all one unit on the e500s... if so would changing the transmission fluid fix this issue?
thanks

Dealer should check to see if vehicle is included in Service Campaign (covered out of warranty) affecting MY 05-07 203/211/220 4matic (see link) http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...ml#post5902434 If not, replace TC oil. If problem persists and within VIN range, may need to replace with modified TC – see bulletin (covered under extended warranty). No warranty, if vehicle is regularly serviced by MB dealer, request goodwill assistance for replacement since MB released modified part to correct known problem.

made an appointment to take the E500 in on monday. before I do, I decided to look at my VIN. It's in the effected range. So being curious, I looked at my transfer case and it's serial is PRE affect range for the service campaign (my TC SN is 086467). However my problem is identical to the description. So I know the service bulletin applies but unsure of the service campagin.
