Locating the purge valve!

Hi

Had a gas cap warning in the instrument panel and replaced it (the gas cap). Didn't stop this warning coming back. I have read that this is likely to be fixed cleaning or replacing the purge valve. I found a thread on how to locate it on a E320 but I can't seem to find it in my E500 2004 (W211)

Can anyone please tell me where to find it? If the gas cap warning is unrelated to the purge valve I would like to have that confirmed.

Hope to hear from you

I have the same problem I am trying to find it on mine. It sounds like it is on the filler neck. Did you have any luck?

Hi,

No I never succeeded ...bought another car instead!

Looks like some friendly soul provided you the information...wish I had been given that earlier.

I have a brand new purge valve for sale in case you need one

Best of luck!

I have an 05 E320 with same problem. Did the purge valve solve the problem?

nope and neither did the fuel shut off valve. Now they are talking that there might be a problem with the fuel tank being cracked.

To the best of my knowledge fuel system is covered for 15 years/unlimited mileage.

Reviving this PURGE VALVE thread, I'm chasing the cause of a rough idle. I've changed plugs, cleaned EGR, throttle body, and MAF, and replaced a number of deteriorated and suspect vacuum hoses. It's running much smoother now, better milage, more power. However IT'S NOT PERFECT (my former E500 was so smooth it sometimes felt as if it was not running).

I understand a 'sticky purge valve' can contribute to a rough idle. Must it be replaced, or can it be cleaned?

Next looking at coils, O2 sensors, injectors. On these, if bad should there be a code? If not, how to test?

I've looked, but can't find reference to a 'throttle valve'. Is there one on these cars?

Any smart guys out there?

Thanks!

How did everything go? I have semi-rough idle on my 2005 W211 (E320) - has 59k miles. Got a code P0456 the other day, which is the code for a small evap leak fuel purge valve/canister leak or loose gascap. Before I begin replacing the purge valve and hoses, just curious what is the most common component to fail in a lower-mileage E320 when code P0456 is thrown.

Still looking. I noticed in the car's history that the purge valve and charcoal cannister have been replaced. Cleaned out the EGR, MAF, and throttle, plus replaced a number of vacuum hoses. Idle improved a lot. Hit it with Jectron which made a huge difference, so I think it may be dirty injector mamada. Fuel filter which I understand is a 50K replacement item although replaced with the tank, is due.

15-yrs old and only 59k miles?!? Wow. Less than 4000 miles a year.

I would start checking all those rubber hoses. They dry out and crack over time. Might want to look at the condition of the spark plugs as well. I assume this car sat for long periods of time.

Read somewhere then today talked to the dealer where I bought the latest. He said sometimes the motor mounts age and can cause the engine to vibrate as if it's rough idle.
