Cracked Windshield!

Does anyone know if a 1 inch crack on the drivers side lower corner can be repaired. Is there anything that can keep it from cracking more? Or, am I doomed in the freezing temperatures? A DAMN rock hit my window yesterday going home from work and left a 1 inch crack. I live in Virginia so I don't know if it will fail inspection or not. Has anyone had their windshield replaced? If so, how much does it cost for a MB windshield, not aftermarket?

Thanks...

Insurance covered it but....

I had to have my windshield replaces on a C320 and the cost of the glass was about $600 if I recall correctly. I did not see the actual bill but this is a figure that sticks in my mind.

Sorry to hear about the crack. Those damn rocks, and other road debris, can be so annoying.

I don't know the law of your state but in New Jersey, it has to be replaced intead of repaired, I don't know the price of new e windshield (call your dealer to get a free quote), my bmw dealer charged me 800 bucks but a glass shop charged me 500 bucks if it is paid by insurance company; $350 if you pay it by yourself. (both dealer and shop use the original bmw windshield) If you can find a shop which is willing to repair it, it costs 75 to 100 bucks depends upon the crack. it depends on your insurance deductible amount but usually most of people pay for it from their own pocket insead of claim it from insurance to avoid fee increased. (it happened twice in my bimmer so don't feel bad.)

Thanks for all the info. I spoke with the dealer, they estimated almost $950 for the replacement. Virginia law states if it more than 1.5 inches in diameter, it needs to be replaced. It is at about that length so I will try to get it fixed. I called Safelite autoglass repair and they said they would come out to my work and fix it for $60. Well see it how it looks.

Thanks...

Have it sealed by a professional outfit...

So that the crack doesn't spread. This will buy you some time to decide whether or not you want to replace the windshield.

Obviously, replacement through the dealer is expensive, but that's probably the best place to get it done with true MB glass. Also, you want to make sure they mount and seal it properly. I've seen some really poor windshield jobs done by aftermarket mobile services... they'll come to your car's location and do it on the spot. I'd steer CLEAR of these jobs!

Check you auto insurance policy... mine covers cracked windshield repair/replacement depending on the degree of the damage.

I had a half-inch crack on my E500 and got it fixed ($59.50) They said that same spot won't crack again and it's life time warranty or else money back. They come to my house to do the fix took about 40 minutes. The fix is now close to transparent and quite invisible. The company name is called Novus. Good luck.

easy to fix, you should be able to get it done for about $40. if one wont do it, call another.

good lord you guys got quoted a lot of money for a replacement windshield. I got quoted about $200 and that includes tax/install AND they come to my apartment. But then again, these aren't OEM windshields that I got quoted for.

The $200 job at your apartment are the outfits I'm talking about... stay away from those. You're asking for trouble like poor seals and a poor fit. Rattling glass, especially over bumps.

It's not worth it to go the cheapo route. Get it sealed professionally and cross your fingers. If it spreads, or you don't like the way it's looking in the sun, then go to your friendly dealer and shell out some bucks to get it done right.

Cheers!

Bad luck for me. Two days after replying to this post, a truck in front of me kicked up a huge rock and cracked my windshield. The damage isn't too noticeable. It's about a pea sized crater with 3 tails. Is there any other place other than the dealer that sells SECURIT glass?

Sorry to appear a bit 'thick' but how do 'OEM' fitters cope with the rain sensing electrics etc?

sorry to hear about all the low flying rocks though.

For an extra $90 something a year you can get full glass OEM replacement added to your insurance.
I replaced 3 windshields in the last 7 years and have a very small chip in my current E already! The last windshield was $450. installed, S420 OEM glass, not at MB. Very good job.

Also check this out for small repairs:

What sucks is that I JUST got a BRAND NEW Windshield at the dealer....cost me ~600 or so and I ALREADY have two small chips in the glass, one just from being behind a truck the other day for a moment before I overtook it at 100mph. It wasn't fast enough.

Stay away from these trucks! Especially the dumping kind carrying concrete rocks etc or even salt in colder climates.

I was cursing at the top of my lungs when I got hit with the stone. It is all so unnecessary.

It doesn't just stop at the glass, there's a chip on my grill, as well. It seems the best thing to do is to NOT drive on the highway to work everyday. Just use your not so expensive car for daily commutes, and relegate the E for a finer driving experience.

If possible I would highly recommend using the body shop at American Service Center to replace your windshield. I went through the same thing with my Mclass and the ASC did a much better job than the come to your house place. The factory does a real good job of attaching the windshield so there is more to it than meets the eye with the sensors etc. Ask for John. Good luck!!

Had about a 1" star filled at the dealer for $70 dollars. Only noticeable as a very small bright spot when the sun shines directly onto the windshield.

Edit: Not sure if you noticed Davel, but this is a very old post (from last year) that has been revived recently.

Whoa...I can't believe I am actually saying something good about ASC--otherwise known as the Evil (TM) dealership in my books. This must be a first.

Yes, they replaced my glass, and they did it really well. Although, I will note that they get the work done through a contractor, as well. However, the contractor has been doing imports (particularly German imports) for almost two decades. They know their deal. I can't tell that my car does not have the original windshield.

I also worked with John, but he is at the Alexandria branch and not Arlington. Not sure if you meant him or not.

p.s. Buy a car from ASC at your own peril. I can safely say that I have had MUCH better experience with my '97 Honda. This would be everything from Sales through Service.

I am on the third windshield and it has a bad chip- Glass company lady told me they are seeing a lot of the new "e"'s and the 745 and 5 series Bimmers. She guesses the lower hoodline or something is at play-

I have twice been nailed by the car in front of me (not a big truck) sevrving over toward the centerline and kicking up gravel.

Thanks, didn't pay attention to the date, can't vouch for ASC, bought my car from Alexandria (although Herb Gordon MB is less than 5 miles from my house) but can vouch for John, sounds like he took care of you.
