W211 transmission fluid change

What is a reasonable price for changing the transmission fluid of a 2003 E320? MB Dealer quoted me about 500 dollars. Thanks

I would find a independent and see what they want to do the job. See if they will use your parts and fluid.

I do my own changes and recently found Shell ATF134 which is approved by MB for the 722.6 transmission for approximately $4.50 a quart. Order the filter from Parts.com for about $12 and a gasket for another $10.

Here is the link to Ryder who mail orders the fluid for 4.26 plus shipping (cheap). http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/ry...oductDetail.do

I was talkin' to an MB tech who does work on the side...he quoted $130 for tranny service, if I provide parts/fluids. I have the 722.9 tranny though.

I bought some fluid from Ryder, but they charged me for CA taxes, as well as a fee for hazardous material. Total cost per bottle was $5.19, which was a little more than what I was planning originally, but still a good deal.

How many quarts of fluid would I need for my E320 5-speed transmission? Thanks again.

To do a full flush about 14 quarts.

However, I don't do the flush. I drain the transmission and change the filter and have found it will need 4 quarts to fill it. Run it for a few hundred miles and suction the transmission from the fill tube and then refill the amount taken out which will be about 3 quarts.

This method basically gets most of the old fluid out. I also do a 30K mile change interval now with the filter and fluid.

My transmission now shifts perfectly and is smooth as glass.

My indie does a similar procedure but

Do not flush. There are electronics inside or connected to some trannys. I drain the fluid, change the filter, clean the pan and magnet, run it a few hundred miles and repeat the procedure. 30k is a good interval. I change the gasket and crush washer both times.

Search and you will find a Mb video about how they recommend they do perform it in Germany, maybe on one of the Gwagen sites.

Guess the German units need service but ours magically are lifetime!

There are definitely electronics inside but there is no reason to worry about them and changing the fluid -- just don't probe around.

I follow the same procedure as you but not the repeat procedure. Instead of removing the pan the second time I just suction all the fluid I can via the fill tube and then refill with more new fluid.

Using either method will do the trick. get the dirty fluid for the most part out.

Then change it (fluid and filter) every 30K and all should be good.

How many quarts do you typically get out via suction? Oh, 3 quarts. How about what is left?
No doubt smoothness is improved, quieter too.

changing the filter twice maybe overkill on my part.

What you don't get with the suction is what is in the filter. Less than a quart. I have gotten 4 quarts from the pan and filter both times I have drained it. My CDI holds 8 quarts total which is a half quart less than the E350/E500 transmissions. So I figure that now after two changes I have close to new fluid. I check it periodically and it is still clean and red.

The second time I changed the filter is was still very clean.
