Yes it can. I took out the Airmatic in my 55k and swapped in coilovers for both front and rear.

I looked through the posts and couldn't find the cost of the conversion parts & labor. Anyone know the cost?

Why would you want to change the airmatic to regular coil suspension?

I can't think of a reason in the world, other than increased reliability, lower cost, and not having to visit the dealer regularly with a seven year-old car.

Now when going to coil overs what did you have to to so the computer would not give you all the red warnings, and did you remove the compressor?

you must go to the dealer, have them switch the program from air to steel for the suspension.

I dropped the struts and the airbag. I still have some other things I need to take out to shed some more weight.

Not sure on the cost of the parts from factory. Price also depends on which coilovers you choose to go with. The KW V2 option retails for a hair over $2k if I'm not mistaken.

For lots of different reasons. 2 off the top of my head...
1. It's a lot more reliable than the airmatic.
2. For those of us who drive the W211 in a spirited fashion, the car handles day and night better compared to the air-suspension.

My friend who did the install is a factory trained tech and has his own shop. He took care of everything to make the car run flawlessly!

Well anyone who knows what they are doing with a Star can do it also. I think that was all that was required but I'm not sure.
