Question 06 CDI buying advise

I've come across an 06 E320 CDI that I'm interested in and would love to hear what W211 E320 owners have to say about the car?

Things to look for?
Known issues?
Is it a "buy" year or run away as fast as I can year?

I'm going to test drive it tomorrow.

Thanks!

2006 E320 CDI
Two years ago I purchased my 2006 cdi. At the time it had approximately 48k miles. It now has 76k miles. During that time, I had both lower ball joints replaced, one motor mount, a set of glow plugs, transmission flush, thermostat, fuel, air and cabin filters, and just recently, brakes and rotors. It may seem like a lot to you, but it sure runs sweet! I would not trade it for anything, except maybe a 2009 bluetec.

My experience is about the same as mtrevelino. Mine had 64K and now has 105K and I have done motor and transmission mounts, wheel alignment, new tires, glow plugs, thermostat, filters. Just had the alignment done and the technician checked all the front and rear suspension and all is OK. I have changed the transmission oil and filter. I had the dealer do a brake flush right after I bought the car. Also had to replace the Serpentine belt and two tensioners. All of my maintenance has been done by me with the exception of the alignment, brake flush and Serpentine belt replacement.

I don't plan on parting with mine anytime soon. Love the way it drives and handles, the fuel economy (highway = 38 to 42), and power.

Just make sure the car has been properly maintained and that it has no currrent issues that need attention that you are not willing to pay to fix.

This model was the last of the I6 cast iron block diesels and the engine looks like it will be comparable to the long running OM617 5 cylinder and 6 cylinder OM606 that date back to the late 70s, 80s and 90s. Just keep the oil and all the filters changed and and it should last for many thousands of miles.

Best Car I have ever owned!

2 years ago I bought mine with 18K miles, now it has 34K. I plan to drive it into the ground. Perform all my own maintenance so far that is all aside from one dealer performed brake flush!

Highly recommend this car. Make sure you know the history!

I bought an 05 from a forum member just over a year ago and love the car. Was still under warranty, so off to MB KC it went. They replaced the motor mounts and a couple of other little items. Had 43k on it then, 57k on it now. Outside of regular maintenancee items, it is a killer car.

I see you are local to KC. Erik at MB KC is the best when it comes to service and advice.

What are clear symptoms of failing motor mounts, a vibration throughout the vehicle?

Any input on signs of motor mount failure? I am currently looking for one and welcome any further input or references.

If you are feeling increased vibration when accelerating and when turning they beginning to fail. Another test is to open the hood and with the engine running put your hand on the engine cover and then on the body and see how much difference the vibration is. If it is a large difference (engine vibrates but body is much less) they are probably ok -- if it is about the same then they are ready for replacement.

It is best to do the engine and transmission at the same time. A bad transmission mount can also cause significant vibration.

And last but not least -- replace with MB parts. You can get them from Parts.com for about the same price as aftermarket parts and they will perform much better.

Thanks for that, how tough of a DIY job is this?

You need to have a lift and a transmission jack to hold the engine and the bolts on the top of the mount are hard to get to ( I think they are 16MM which is a odd size). Bottom bolts are easy. Do one side at a time.

It is a very easy DIY job. The first time it took me about 2 hours mainly due to not knowing how things came apart or how much to take off to get to the mounts. I just used 2 jack stands and a floor jack with a thick phone book ontop of it to lift the engine by the transmission bellhousing. The drivers side mount takes about 15 minutes or so to change, passenger side you have to remove the air cleaner box, heat shield, and unclamp the exhaust from the turbo to get to the mount and that takes about 20-30 minutes if you know how it all comes apart. The transmission mount is about a 5-10 minute job.
