Is the E240 true dual exhaust all the way back?

It should work just fine then, I think the exhaust setup is the same with primary cats -> secondary cats -> resonators -> mufflers. Obviously you won't get the same sound as a V8 and you might have to modify your rear bumper for the quad exhaust tips but other than that I think you should be good. If you can post a picture of the underside of the car under the lift I can give you a definite yes or no.

Its my understanding that the e350 catback exhaust is very restricted from the factory. I was informed that you can somehow increase the hp's by releasing the catback but not compromise the sound very much at all. What exactly needs to be done & approx how much? Thx

This is an age old controversy and debate but I will give you the synopsis. Exhaust systems on naturally aspirated engines such as the E350 and E550 work on the principle of exhaust scavenging, meaning that there are low pressure and high pressure zones in each exhaust pulse produced by the engine. The trailing low pressure zone along each pulse helps "pull" the subsequent wave out faster, a principle called exhaust scavenging. That's the reason, other than sound, it doesn't make sense to put a 3" exhaust all the way back because you lose the benefit of scavenging and you end up producing less low-end torque and potentially less power overall. I had a ricer once tell me more air in and more air out is best, but that's not true at all. For turbocharged cars, that work off of exhaust gases and dump down into the exhaust setup, they act like a low-pass filters across the system and don't produce pronounced pulses in the same way a naturally aspirated engine does. That's why some monster builds with turbos have virtually straight piped exhaust or open downpipes because they don't want the restrictive downpipe and cat-back setup. This is different with N/A engines, and is often referred to as "necessary back-pressure." Well back-pressure is not really good in any situation, but it's really a misnomer because people refer to exhaust scavenging as back-pressure often incorrectly, which it kind of is, but it isn't the same principle they're referring to.

To answer your questions as to what can be done, I'm sure complete systems from Meisterschaft, Kleemann, Eisenmann or the like will help increase power, more torque than HP I would think, since they are designed with these considerations in mind, but the results will only be marginal on an otherwise stock car. The best thing you can do is get long tube headers for an N/A engine. However, being 4-Matic this is more challenging for you and probably doesn't make sense anyway. Headers are pretty expensive.

ok so my exhaust quest is over.i took a shot and the result was Way Beyond my expectations!!
I replaces my mifflers with a Vibrant 1141 Ultra Quiet resonators. But don't let the "ultra quiet " full you LOL...that **** sound vicious....like a C63 on steroids....i'm blown away from the sound quality.....no drone what soever, its for that exotic super car sound...its unreal...i love it.they cost me 190$ and 150$ for labor reusing stock tips and my shop even tucked them in behind the bumper kind of tilted so u dont see anything but the tips.nothing is hanging down like the stock mufflers....i'll post picture later on....here's the best video i was able to take w an iphone....ufcorse that video does not even get close to what it really is in reality....quiet at cruise but when i step on it i see ppl turning heads and looking in their mirrors what that is...oh and driving it on auto/manual is where that baby sings...(shifting at 3-3300rpms)...i know i'm too much lol but can't be happier with the turnout.here's the video and i'll post pics later.

http://youtu.be/DLQ1mqA7dJc

my serup is:all 4 cats,resonator delete/magnaflow X-pupe pipe,vibrant 1141 muffler/resonators,stock tips.

Go for it.I prommise you'll love it.i'm in atlantic city NJ,if any of u guys live close and want to hear in person and decide on exhaust let me know we can meet up and u can hear for yourself!

My days of loud exhausts are over, but that does sound nice. I like it.

When I was younger, I never thought I'd have a 4-door car let alone one with a stock exhaust. Things change. I love that Mercedes calm and quiet now.

Hows the drone at freeway cruising speed (65mph+)? That's my biggest issue with my current muffler delete is the drone is too much at times.

The drone is not bad at all, you only get a little around 1800 and even then it's only a deeper note not ear-piercing sound. That's what the J-Pipe I installed on my muffler delete is for.

Ya muffler delete for me is just a little too loud. As well as drone that really annoys me at times. That's why Im curious how the drone is with these vibrant resonators. I also need to put some sort of mufflers back on so I can pass visual smog inspection here in California.

I like the sound you put together there. Especially if there isn't drone inside the cabin I may copying you.

I'm beginning to wonder if spending time on this forum will save me more, or cost me more. I had never really considered doing anything to something that's not broke (okay.... I could have lived with the little crack in the grille instead of getting the new one ;-), but after hearing njmaxpayne's car, I have a major urge to have someone record my car as I drive around an empty parking lot.

Amgafalterbach......so should I not do an x-pipe? And if I should do an x-pipe should I put in in place where the secondary cats were or further back??? I've been up in the air about this bc people say don't confuse Benz with regular v8 engines bla bla bla...I would think they operate under the same basic principles even though the are not the same.

Usually an X-Pipe is done at the resonators, I don't see any issue doing it on an E55 versus a naturally aspirated E500 or newer E63/E550. I know several people that have done it on the M113 engine with no problem.

the stock resonator is originaly a H-pipe inside wraped in metal body which is full with noise/smoke absorbing glass cotton like insulation....my exhaust guy (who does exhaust work for few of the biggest speed shops in jersey imports, and US muscle) said that i could've use straight pipes and result sound/flow would've been exactly the same.engins are the same as any V8,it's just different cam's,timing, pistons tune...etc,and more electronics.so my pOint is that if u replace that resonator u pretty much replacing quieted down H-pipe with a naked X-pipe...so no need to take of secondary cats...IMO.after what i did if i took of the cats car would've sound like too loud.just x pipe and resonators will do.theres plenty of options out there..to narrow it down as far as loudnes, the LONGER the mufgler the quieter...width does not make as much difference about sound quality as lenght.width also play role too but for example a 6" round resonator will sound louder if it's 12" long and quieter if it's 16-18" long..
