How annoying are these brakes!!

Is it possible to make these stupid brakes shut-up? We've put 900 miles on the wagon so far and the car has been in already for pump replacement and some other fixes that are posted on this board.

WTF?? They are SO annoying. I can't stand driving my wife's car.

We were out to dinner the other night with friends with air and radio off at a stop light and the pump recharged twice. They asked "what the heck is going on with your new car?"

Should we really have to explain to passengers that weird sounds in our cars are normal?

I have the same issue with my car - Based on all of the posts I have read and the other E500's and E320's i have checked, my personal (not technical) opinion is:

1. All the SBS cars make that hydraulic "groaning" sound -

2. All the SBS 211's make that high pitched electronic hum when the brake is electronically activted some louder than others.- however it must be very quiet to be audible and/or you must really have good ears.

3. Even if there is a Service Bulletin & fix for the "hum" i think it is more harmful (depending on your dealer!) to have the problem fixed.

PS...if anyone has had the HUM removed and they are SURE it is gone, let me know the SB# and info. I have just learned to accept the brake groan.

Good luck and enjoy your new car

I just can't believe MB would consider this acceptable. My dealer said they get people in there all the time complaining and they just tell them that's the way it is and get used to it. Wow.

I did get the P-B-42.46/27a service done and it corrected the whine/buzzing on the pedal. And yes, I do have dog hearing but it is definitely corrected know. That annoyed me the most but the HUM is a really close second.

Any chance I can get them to buy back this car and get our '01 Wagon back?

I don't seem to have any of these noises, with or without the radio. I hear the air and hydraulics when I open the car doors in the morning and that is about it.

Same thing on my pre-nav car. No annoying noises at all.

Unhappy Service Bulletin

Hi there

I have a E500 w/ August '03 built date and she does have the two problems

1) groaning brakes
2) high pitch sound with brake pedal when being stepped on

Read some where regarding service bulletin on these problems. One has to do with brake pump while the other is a damper or filter for the pitch. I have not gotten mine fixed yet. If I find out the exact SB number, will post here. If you find out before me, please do likewise

I have actually collected some previous posts relative to the S/B's as I said, im reluctant to let my dealer touch the car due to past experiences on my last benz...but here they are
IF anyone can veryify these for our other board members, that would be great.

TSB # P-B-42.46/27a which involved a pulsation damper to be retrofitted into the suction line near the main SBC hydraulic unit to alleviate the buzzing sound.

421640 Brake operating unit (BOU) removed,
421641 veh. with SBC, replace, R & R
421354 Hydaulic brake system, bleed

With test drive, "found groaning wistly like sound when activating brake pedal." Removed replaced SBC brake system operating unit air bleeded brake system w/DAS machine inspected brake system as per DAS MACH..... "Erased DTC, S and verified repairs found compliant and not present any more"
Hope this helps

Same here as etenn--no sounds except when the door is first opened, a brief pump sound, and occasionally I can sense it when operating the car at idle when stopped, but nobody else in the car even notices it. Nothing annoying.

Are you saying that the buzz is gone?? totally because if it is i will strongly consider having TSB # P-B-42.46/27a done..
I was confused by your message. Please confirm TSB # P-B-42.46/27a removed the high pitched hum..

My '04 E500 has no brake noises....yet....
Once I opened the door and some pumps made a noise that lasted about 3 sec, but that was it, have not heard anything while driving.

The car is constantly moaning and groaning at low speeds and at idle. Very annoying. Not brought to attention of dealers who have done more harm than good to my car and haven't seemed to have fixed anything so far. Definitely not keeping the car beyond the original warranty period.

When we drove at night with no air and no radio I could definitely hear the high high pitched whine/buzz each time I touched the brake pedal. My wife said she kinda heard it but wasn't nearly as critical to her. Now that I've had the fix the pedal whine is definitely gone.

The hum vibration from the recharge or priming, etc.. is there and quite loud. The tech even said it was louder than normal so that's why they replaced the unit but it's back already.

Exactly. If I make a 3 or 4 point turn the brake systems moan and groan like nothing I've heard in a car. I can feel all of the vibration through the pedal as well as the floor board too each time they moan.

It's a shame that the path of improvement and technology has to be riddled with problems.

all these posts from people about complaints about the brakes. It makes me wonder whether MB might dump SBC. I mean, you don't really need the full capability of the SBC system to stop the car.

I also hear the pump-like and air release noise when I open a door or the trunk. Other than that, I haven't heard any of the other noises as described when driving.

It seems that the problem is not wide spread. There seem to be a lot more people without the problem than with the problem.

Hard to tell from the posts but it does seem that just a few people have the complaint about the brake noises.

Funny that both Fletcher Jones and Laguna (basically #1 and #2 in the nation for volume) said they get people in there ALL the time complaining about them.

Unhappy

Hi there

This is an interesting comment regarding Fletcher Jones technician was aware of the groaning brakes & high pitch whine.

I brought mine in for other stuff and my brakes, the comment back was "...this is the first I have heard about this..."

Wanted me to arrange another appointment and leave the car with them to look into the brakes.

Was disappointed with the comment especially when I had mentioned my brake issue when I made my original appointment and now they wouldn't even look at it.

Seriously considering another dealership. Any ideas of a good dealership (service) in the LA area?

Your post and quotes, I think are quoting a previous post of mine regarding my service for the brake "poi" noise. This "fix" DID NOT take care of the problem which recurred 10 days after the servicing. The "poi" noise is the air-like squeaking noise worse especially when the car is cold. It is present most of the time but not all the time when the brake pedal is deployed. This, btw, is NOT the loud hydaulic pump noise which is "normal" albeit irritating.

At any rate, please indicate if TSB # P-B-42.46/27a is the same as the service codes in my post that you quoted or is this TSB is a different fix and is indeed "the fix".
