'05 E500 Sounding like a tractor at idle... help!

Take a look at the video below.... sounds super loud at startup then quiets down a little but still has the clack-clack-clack-clack sound. It sounds like its coming from below the car or the front driver side area... definately not power steering because it doesn't whine, and not sure about motor mounts because revving the engine doesn't make the engine block too much. Pulley? Belts?

Please help!

probably your a/c pulley

the official way to check is to fit a shorter belt that bypasses the a/c pulley. I bought a pulley from ecstuning for ~160 and replaced it myself in about an hour. You need a good snap ring tool and it helps to remove the fan.

yeah but the pulley is turning even with the a/c off. that is why the test bypasses the pulley rather than just having you turn off the a/c. After watching the video I would say it sounds exactly like my a/c pulley.

some people on the forum have replaced the whole a/c compressor in your situation. The reasoning is that the new compressor comes with a new pulley. you can find a compressor for around $450 I think. The install is beyond my abilities and since replacing the pulley only my a/c works fine and is super quiet.

The belt does not have to be replaced right? Just the pulley from ecstuning?

Thanks!

If the belt is ok you don't have to replace it. With the belt off I would check the idle pulley at the top and the belt tensioning pulley also. just spin them by hand and check for excessive play and funny noises.
